Castle's Darragh Smith recovered from bogeys at his first two holes to card a five-under par 65 for a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Irish Students Amateur Open Championship at Bray.
The leader eagled the par-five sixth and added birdies at the seventh, eighth, 11th, 14th and 15th to lead by the minimum on five-under par from Maynooth Scholars' Alan Fahy.
Maynooth golfers Ronan Mullarney, Eanna Griffin and Kyle McCarron, Ulster's Steffan Greenberg and Dublin Business School's Antony McDaid share third place in the 54-hole event, three shots off the lead after 68s.
Maynooth's Shannon Burke and Molly Dowling shot level par 72s to lead the women's tournament by a shot from team mate Ciara Casey.
