Ryder Cup legends Des Smyth and Philip Walton have confirmed their participation in the inaugural Christy O’Connor Jnr Irish PGA Championship Pro-Am at Moyvalley on September 21.

O'Connor Jnr had been engaged to upgrade and redevelop the Co.Kildare venue before his untimely passing in January this year.

As a mark of respect, the PGA in Ireland, in association with the O'Connor family and the directors of Moyvalley Hotel and Golf Resort agreed that the Irish Championship Pro-Am would be named in his honour.

Smyth (63) is a two-time Ryder Cup player who has also served as a vice-captain on two occasions in 2006 and 2014. The Drogheda golfer continues to play regularly on the European Senior Tour.

Walton (54) holed the crucial winning putt for Europe at Oak Hill in 1995 on his only Ryder Cup appearance.

The Dubliner is a regular competitor on the PGA in Ireland Pro-Am circuit when he is not playing on the European Senior tour.

The Christy O’Connor Jnr Irish PGA Championship Pro-Am will precede the staging of the 106th Irish PGA Championship on the Twin Oaks Championship Course from 22-25 September

Tim Rice booked his place in the field by topping the leaderboard at the second qualifier which was held at Moyvalley on Tuesday. The Limerick GC professional carded a three under par 69 to finish one shot ahead of Michael Kelly (Dun Laoghaire GC) and Andy Hogan (Edmondstown GC).

Fostla’s BMW M6 Tuning Program. Subtle, It Is Not

bmw-6-series-gran-coupe-fostla-tuning-1

Owners that want a subtle tune for their BMW M6, turn away. This isn’t it. Tuned By Fostla – a German tuner that mostly does cool car wraps – the M6 Gran Coupe is far from the mild and subtle projects we’ve seen in the past.  It’s loud and it’s flashy, but, it somehow works. In the good old racing game type of way, it works.

First, the tuner installed a Prior Design body kit – PD6XX – which brings a set of wide fenders, carbon fiber lips, a rear decklid spoiler and diffusers,  all finished off with a matte grey vinyl wrap and decals. As we’ve seen in the past, the widebody kit suits the M6 well.

Next on the list for the tuner were a new set of glossy blue aftermarket wheels. While the extravagant color fits the wheels well, they might be an overkill for the M6, but, for this build, they fall right into place. The wheels are sized 20 inches front and rear.

They come with a set of tires sized 245/30/20 and 295/30/20  front and rear, respectively. To get the vehicle closer to the ground and give it a better stance, the tuner installed a set of Pro-Kit lowering springs from Eibach. These shave 25 mm at the front and 20 mm off the rear, bringing some improved handling and driving dynamics, alongside improved looks.

Finally, Fostla installed a modified BMW M6 exhaust system, alongside a performance chip-tune by PP-Performance. With this BMW M6, these increase the original power output of the M6 – 450 PS (444 HP) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque – to 570 PS (562 HP) and 785 Nm (579 lb-ft) of torque. The BMW M6 build is showcased in an gorgeous mountain-inspired photoshoot. You can check out the full media gallery right below.

Royal Belfast's Marilyn Henderson will be at Arklow next Wednesday to begin her defence of the  Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship.

A Rosslare last year, she finished two shots clear of Mallow's Mary Dowling,  2014 Senior’s Open Stroke Play champion Minna Kaarnalahti from Finland and the Island's Gertie McMullen, who has won the Irish Senior Close Championship for the past two years

Title favourites McMullen and Kaarnalahti will get the championship underway at 8.30am next Wednesday with Dowling, Portumna's Suzanne Corcoran, Donabate's Pat Doran, Royal Portrush's Mary MacLaren and Grange's Sheena McElroy hot on their heels.

There are a host of Nations represented in the popular Irish Senior event, including Canada, England, Finland, Germany, The Netherlands, the USA, Scotland and South Africa.

After stroke play rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, the field will cut to the top forty for the final round on Friday.

VIDEO: The Smoking Tire drives the BMW 340i M Sport

2016-bmw-340i-test-drive-images-13

BMW recently replaced its famous N55 engine with the new B58 engine in the new BMW 340i. While the beloved N55 still lives on in cars like the BMW M2 and X4 M40i, the new B58 is the future for BMW. It’s also better than the N55. It’s more powerful, more efficient, runs cooler and even sounds better. Just the new engine alone makes the 340i a successful replacement for the outgoing 335i. In the latest episode of The Smoking Tire, Matt Farah drives a BMW 340i M Sport to see for himself.

Funnily enough, Farah didn’t know that the 340i had a new engine. He though it was the same N55 as in the 335i. Admittedly, it does get quite confusing. So the owner of the car riding shotgun had to fill him in. After first taking off, Farah notes just how fast the new BMW 340i is. It’s faster than most people would think, getting from 0-60 mph in around 4.8 seconds. That’s properly quick and faster than supercars from the ’90s.

A lot of it has to do with just how smoothly the new B58 puts power down. Farah puts it well by saying that it doesn’t feel stressed, it just easily delivers power throughout its rev range. It also pulls cleanly all the way to redline, unlike the N55 which would drop off a bit toward redline. Power for the BMW 340i is claimed to be 320 hp, but this owners says that on the dyno, people are getting around 330 hp at the rear wheels. That means that BMW is seriously underrating its engine’s power at the crank.

2016-bmw-340i-test-drive-images-15

This owner’s car has the option M Sport package, as well as the Track Handling package, and it looks so much better because of it. The Estoril Blue paint with the black 18″ wheels looks fantastic. He also has various M Performance interior touches as well, like the alcantara trim on the dash that reads “M Performance”. It gives the cabin a sportier and more special feel. Whatever BMW charges for that interior trim, it’s worth it.

All in all, Farah seemed to really like the 340i, claiming it to be a great daily driver. It’s very fast, good looking, has a comfortable ride and a near-perfect driving position. It also isn’t too harsh or too loud for daily use. It’s a smooth and comfortable, yet very fast and very fun, sport sedan that can be used everyday.

Future Audi Q4 to compete with BMW X4

Standaufnahme Farbe: Sonoragelb

The Germans just love to copy each other. It’s actually kind of humorous, as one German company can’t come out with a new car without the others following suit. Admittedly, it makes sense. The Germans basically created the car segments we currently use today, so when one develops a new one, the others must compete. Such is the case with the upcoming Audi Q4 SUV, set to compete with the current BMW X4.

While there’s no official word from Audi on this, trademark applications have been filed by Audi for the Q4 moniker. It’s not surprising that Audi would do such a thing, though, as the brand just recently released the Q2 crossover and it’s going over pretty well. So it’s basically going to apply the same idea to a Q4, something to slot between the Q3 and Q5.

Audi TT offroad concept

Being that there’s no official word from Audi on the Q4, we don’t know what sort of powertrains will be on offer or what it will even be like. It’s not even in development, yet, as Audi is just now applying for a trademark for the name. But we could see a hybrid powertrain in the upcoming Q4, as well as all future Audi vehicles, as the Ingolstadt-based brand has already made a statement about being in battery development with Samsung.

Audi also trademarked the “SQ4” name, meaning that a performance variant will be coming as well. Similar to the Audi SQ5, the SQ4 would be the high-performance version and compete with the likes of the BMW X4 M40i. At the moment, the X4 M40i doesn’t really have any natural competition, so this could be its first.

As far as looks and styling go, the Audi Q4 will likely take inspiration from the Audi TT Offroad Concept. But either way, expect some of the new styling language from Audi’s current models, like the Q7, Q2 and A4. Though, expect it to look more like the Q2 than Q7, as it will be sportier. And, it would make sense that Audi tries to keep the two cars looking similar, as they’re both departures from Audi’s usual lineup.

When the BMW X4 first came out, it didn’t have anyone to play with. Then the Mercedes GLC Coupe came out and now it has a bit of competition. However, this new Audi Q4 would make the segment a truly competitive one and you could see other companies follow suit soon after.
