"If Shane tries to be Pádraig, he won't win"

Paul McGinley believes Shane Lowry could be a dark horse for Masters glory as long as he stops trying to be like Padraig Harrington.

The Clara man comes into Augusta feeling rested after the arrival of his daughter Iris a few weeks ago and like defending champion Danny Willett 12 months ago, he could surprise the favourites by coming up on the rails.

Given the fitness work he has done in recent years, Lowry might even surprise a few people with his turn of speed.

But McGinley is adamant that work in the gym is not what Lowry needs to be the best player he can be.

Asked what Lowry has to do to win a Masters, or a major, McGinley said: "Just be Shane. If he tries to be Pádraig, he won't win. He is a very different player to Pádraig.

"Practising for six hours a day and being totally dedicated and going to the gym every day, that's everything Shane shouldn't be doing.

"Just be Shane. Get more experience, more confident, keep playing his game, make good decisions and it will happen.

"I think he is in a good place, Shane. And I think his early season statistics have been very good.

"He has had a really strong start to the year. He likes the big occasion; he likes Augusta. The course will suit him. He has now got a few Masters under his belt.

"So I wouldn't be surprised to see Shane having a strong Masters. Another guy who likes the big occasion and has done well on the big occasion. I don't see why he can't do well."

McGinley backing McIlroy in a gunfight: "When Rory got in Dustins' rear view mirror at the FedEx, there was only one winner"

when Rory got in his rear view mirror at the FedEx Cup last year, there was only one winner.

Talk that Rory McIlroy is destined to win the Masters sooner rather than later can only delay the Co Down's man date with destiny.

That's the view of Sky Sports analyst Paul McGinley, who believes that McIlroy must persuade himself that he is chasing, not the final leg of a career grand slam, but the first of multiple career slams and a place alongside Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as one of golf's all time greats.

Whatever the result, McGinley is expecting a clash of the titans at Augusta National next week as so many of the game's top players arrive in Georgia at the top of their games.

Form is important when it comes to winning the Masters with five of the last six champions all lifting a trophy within four months before pulling on the famous green jacket.

McIlroy's last win was six months ago but the rules hardly apply there, so close has he come to wins before and after his six-week injury layoff.

What excites McGinley is the prospect of this new generation of players finally going head to head for a major win with McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama Rickie Fowler and Jon Rahm coming up against perennial Masters contenders like Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson.

"I think you are going to see a real good battle this year of the powerhouses in the game," McGinley said in a promotional press interview for Sky Sport's Masters coverage some four weeks ago.

"What we have been missing from the game in the last two or three years is the powerhouses going head to head. The mix with Rickie, and Rory and Matsuyama has now joined them. Jason Day, a former No 1.

"We want to see two or three of those heavyweights going at it. Sport thrives on rivalry. Every sport. And if you don't have rivalries, it is not quite the same."

As an Irishman and an admirer of McIlroy's, McGinley hopes to see the young Holywood man fulfill his date with history as he bids to become just the sixth player to complete the modern career Grand Slam and join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Nicklaus and Woods on the Mount Olympus of golf.

Like Danny Willett, who came into the Masters last year feeling rested after the birth of his first child, McGinley believes that freshness could be a factor for McIlroy this year.

"There was a freshness about Danny and when he got into contention on Sunday," McGinley said. "There was a freshness about him, he was having a great day, he didn't have to deal with the pressure that Jordan had every night of doing press conferences, sleeping on the lead. He was coming up on the rails. There was a freshness about him and when the opportunity presented itself, he was able to go over the line."

McIlroy ticks all the boxes required of a Masters champion and even if his putting lets him down at times, the rest of his game is so good that he doesn't have to putt exceptionally to win a green jacket.

What he does have to avoid is believing that a win is inevitable and doesn't ends up like Tom Weiskopf, Greg Norman or Ernie Els - three "certainties" to win the Masters who never pulled it off.

"This talk that his game is suited to winning at Augusta, his game is perfect for Augusta, is very dangerous talk," McGinley said. "And hopefully, he is not listening to any of that noise because that is terrible talk.

"They said that about Greg Norman, he never won a Masters. They said that about Ernie Els. He never won a Masters. That's dangerous talk, and I am sure he is not listening to that.

"He knows how to play the golf course with the lead that he had in 2011. He knows how to play the course, and he knows how to get it around there.

"And he has obviously got the heart to win major championships. We have all seen that. We all know that. He has all the skill set required to win around there. We all know that.

"The challenge for Rory is that he is on the threshold of history. And there is a reason why only five guys have won the grand slam - it is because it is such a big step up. Phil Mickelson hasn't done it. He is still waiting on a US Open to complete the grand slam.

"It is a big, big, big mental challenge to get over that line and join the history of all time history in golf. And we have an Irishman standing on that threshold. That is the challenge for Rory. There is a reason why only five have done it."

McGinley believes that McIlroy should not be aiming for the career grand slam but multiple career slams.

"Personally, I'd love to see him — and I am not one to speak for Rory and tell him what to do — but there is another elite group: Woods and Nicklaus. They are the only players in the world in the history of the game who have won multiple Slams. Rory is not a million miles away from that either.

"And it is exciting. It is challenging. But it is a big, big, big mental hurdle. And that is why Rory needs all the focus he can; the focus on joining history and not to be left with one major as part of his trophy cabinet."

The challenge gets tougher every year but McGinley believes the great ones rise to such challenges.

"These players, their mindset is not the same as maybe me or you. That's why they are major champions. They thrive on making history."

The reality is that Woods and Nicklaus were head and shoulders above the rest and they knew it. Is McIlroy?

"No, he's not," McGinley replied.

Why not? "

"Because the guys around him are unbelievably strong players. He is not head and shoulders above them. If you ask me, all on their game, playing their best, who is going to win? I am backing Rory. But only by a short head. His performance in the majors last year, you know... Yeah, he won the FedEx at the end of last year, but his results are not showing he is ahead and shoulders above the rest compared to where Tiger was. And he will be the first to admit that.

"As I said before, these guys challenging Rory are great news for Rory. He thrives on people putting it up to him. He thrives on players winning and achieving and creating a whole load of conversation around them - oh, he's the best.

"Listen to the Golf Channel at the moment, which I regularly do, and it's, 'Oh DJ is this, he can match Rory toe to toe off the tee, he can putt, he can do this, he can do that.'

"But when Rory got in his rear view mirror at the FedEx Cup last year, there was only one winner. That mindset Rory had at that FedEx, it's a long time since I saw him like that. I watched that. I was in Florida at the time and I watched it live with a friend of mine for the last five holes and then the playoff.

"The mindset, the focus, the aura, the place where Rory was mentally for that hour and a half, it had been a while since I saw him there. That was Rory at his very best. He had one thing on his mind. He was going to win that FedEx. He was going to do it. There was a joyfulness about how he did it. There wasn't a grim determination like when Tiger played.

"When Rory plays, there's a joyfulness when he plays the game. We are all with him and all watching him. We watch his exuberance. When he holed out his wedge shot on 16 for a two to get right up there with the lead, the exuberance on his face, the pure joy, the ecstasy, we all bought into it. He jumped off the tv. Then immediately he was back into focus again. That's what we need from Rory. We know he can do that. That's the mindset he needs for Augusta."

Some believe that McIlroy might be better off coming from behind to win at Augusta but McGinley knows that players like McIlroy like to do it on the front foot and in the full glare of the spotlight.

"As I say, the mindset of guys like Rory compared to me or you is very different. I didn't win majors, but I can see the mindset. They thrive on having all the attention on them and being centre stage. They thrive on that.

"So not everybody is going to succumb to the pressure. And I think Rory is one who has proved himself on so many occasions now in the heat of battle that he has the heart to do it. I think joining history and hopefully, not just joining the Grand Slam club but joining the double grand slam club is what is going to drive him during this Masters.

"If we can see the focus that we saw in that last round when Dustin Johnson was just ahead of him and he was chasing him down, stalking him down, he was jumping off the TV. His focus was awesome.

"But he also had that balance of joyfulness when he plays. He dances down the fairways but there is a real determination and focus about where he is going."

Now your MINI can be turned into a mobile street vendor

From April 2017 the MINI Convertible can be fitted with the new John Cooker Works package and turned into a mobile street vendor. The MINI Convertible receives a solid-oak food sales and preparation surface. This features an induction cooker with integrated fume hood. The vehicle’s generously proportioned 160 – 215 liter luggage compartment of the MINI Convertible stores the required cooling technology, whilst a high-voltage Natural Food Nanotechnology® battery ensures power supply and is charged by the standard brake energy regeneration system while driving. Food waste is further utilized by the NFN® battery system to sustainably power the unique vehicle.

The solid-wood surface made from sustainably grown oak in Cornwall, folds to fit the contours of the interior when the roof is down and serves as a stable storage for food and beverages in spite of the light-weight construction technology used. The package meets all food regulation requirements and can be used for hot and cold dishes alike. Customers selecting this new pack benefit from a highly flexible food sales vehicle, with a menu of applications including selling sushi, ice cream or fresh juices.

Only the driver’s seat needs to be folded down in order to install the MINI John Cooker Works Package. This creates an amazing amount of space under the solid-oak surface which can be used for storing ingredients and cooking utensils. Should the weather suddenly turn, the convertible roof can be closed in only 18 seconds with the food surface in place.

Potential customers could include start-ups looking to prepare their culinary masterpieces directly in front of their customers’ eyes, or kiosk operators who need a spacious food presentation area, the MINI Convertible with John Cooker Works Package offers countless opportunities for businesses.

The introductory price is €1.959,00 / $ 1.959,00 / £ 1.959,00 and the package can be ordered at selected MINI partners as of today.

“The strikingly painted and backlit mirror caps and side scuttles in Citrus Yellow give the MINI Convertible an sharp street food look. We applied the knowhow we gained from our MINI Yours vehicle personalisation programme”, says Tam Bree of the MINI Design Team.

The Sport Stripes for the John Cooker Works Package are in Chilli Red and Berry Blue.

“Street food businesses are a great complement to established restaurants and offer their customers fantastic variety. However, typical street food trucks are often too big and cumbersome for our city centres. The MINI Convertible can be used by street food vendors to whisk their food directly to the customer and even right onto festival grounds”, says Harry Chinn from MINI Business Innovation.

The John Cooker Works Accessory Package perfectly matches the Salt, Pepper and Chilli MINI equipment packages.

“The MINI Convertible is now even more unique than ever before and is the smallest multifunctional food truck in the world”, says Adam Zapple, Head of Development of MINI Special Vehicles.

Be it on the streets of Shanghai, in front of Barcelona’s office blocks or whipping around tourist hotspots in London, the MINI Convertible with John Cooker Works Package is an eye catcher making life hard for the burger van chips or the corner café.

BMW/MINI UK workers could strike over penisons

The four UK plants that develop cars and components for BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce in Oxfordshire, Chichester, Birmingham and Swindon employ thousands of workers. Of these workers, about 3,500 of them are in the Unite union and have threatened to strike over pension issues.

BMW apparently wants to move workers pension from one plan to another and it could cost some UK workers up to €160,000 in retirement money. Because of this, the Unite union took a vote to strike and 93 percent were in favor of the strike. According to Unite general secretary Len McCluskey, “BMW needs to reflect on this extraordinary vote in favor of industrial action and the real possibility that its UK workforce will strike for the first time under its ownership in the coming weeks.”

Unite simply wants to negotiate with BMW to reach a common ground. BMW seems open to this as well, with a BMW spokesperson claiming “BMW Group has always prided itself in providing excellent pensions for its staff and wants to act now to protect future pension provision for its UK workforce.”

So it seems that there will be some sort of negotiation in the future, which will help both BMW and the Unite union to reach a middle ground. This is for the best, of course, as BMW surely wants to keep its employees happy and doesn’t want them striking, while the employees want their pensions to remain safely intact. If such a negotiation doesn’t happen soon, though, Unite workers are planning on meetings to figure out when to strike. Hopefully this is worked out soon, for the sake of both parties.

Will BMW or MINI top last year’s April Fools joke?

April Fools is upon us, as tomorrow marks the first day of April. It’s usually a time when people play practical jokes on each other, making outrageous claims purely for shock value, only to hope that the recipient of this information has forgotten what day it is. Sometimes, the prank or joke is made with full understanding that both parties are aware it’s an April Fools prank. Very tongue-in-cheek, then. MINI pulled a good one last year and it was possibly my favorite automotive April Fools joke.

Last year, April 1, 2016, MINI debuted what it called the “Hipster Hatch“. Given my distaste for these man-bun-headed, flannel wearing, gluten-free hippies, I genuinely enjoyed it. This MINI Hipster Hatch supposedly featured a twin-deck cassette player, a fixed-gear transmission, stonewash denim upholstery and, my personal favorite, Instagram filter tinted windows.

Not only is this April Fools MINI goofing on hipsters but it also even seems like something a car company would do. So it actually makes me laugh, genuinely.

I’m wondering what sort of April Fools day pranks BMW and/or MINI will pull this year. I’m hoping for something good and fun, like when BMW announced it would be making an E92 M3 pickup truck. Something to get internet trolls fuming right before they realize that it’s April 1 and they’ve been had. Ahh, good stuff.

Maybe BMW could announce that it would be making another pickup, now that Mercedes-Benz has one. Or, if the Bavarians were feeling extra cruel, they could announce an M3 Touring just to make us hope for BMW to not be kidding. That one would hurt, I’m actually not sure I would be okay with that. Actually, BMW, don’t tease us like that.

Ultimately, I like when car companies to stuff like this, though. It shows they have a sense of humor. The auto industry needs a little humor, as it’s usually so stuffy. What do you think either BMW or MINI will do and what sort of prank would you like to see?

Dawson just three behind in Sotogrande; Team Ireland lurking

Robin Dawson. Picture: Golffile

Robin Dawson. Picture: Golffile

Robin Dawson is just three shots behind leader Jack Davidson heading to the final round of what looks like a two-horse race for the European Nations Cup in Cadiz.

Tied for the lead with the Welshman after two rounds, the Tramore man slipped two behind when he went out in two over 38 at Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande.

When he bogeyed the 10th and 12th, he was five shots behind Davidson with six to play. But in what was a rollercoaster finish, he played the last six in one-under to the Welshman's one-over and signed for a 73 that keeps his options very much alive.

Davidson made an eagle, six birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey six for his third successive round of 70 — the joint best score of the day — and a three-shot lead over Dawson on six-under-par.

It was a good day for Ireland, just two shots behind Wales in the team standings, as Tullamore's Stuart Grehan and Castle's Alex Gleeson both shot one-under 71s and Kevin LeBlanc posted his lowest round of the week, a 75.

Grehan had an eagle, three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in his 71, moving up five places to joint third on five over par alongside Spain's Angel Hidalgo and Sweden's Oliver Guillberg.

Trailing the lead by 11 and Dawson by eight, while Gleeson is two shots further back in joint seventh after he made three birdies and two bogeys in a very solid round.

LeBlanc also played well, especially early on. He picked up birdies at the eighth and 11th to be two under for the day with six to play.

But like the leaders, he suffered his lumps on the way home and dropped five shots in his last five holes to take some of the gloss off his day.

In the women's event, Chloé Salort of France also leads by three strokes after a 72 left her on six over.

Car and Driver reviews the 2017 BMW 540i xDrive M Sport

A little while back, I personally declared the new G30-generation 5 Series the best 5er since the famous E39-generation. I still stand by that claim. However, I may not have a lot of company. Car and Driver recently drove the new BMW 540i and, while they seemed to like it overall, seemed a bit disappointed in some of the driving aspects of the car.

Admittedly, C&D gave the 540i more praise than anything else. It received high remarks for its brilliant engine, fantastic interior and superb ride comfort (on adaptive M Sport dampers). These are all points we agree with, as the engine is the best in class as is the interior. The only that comes close, in my humble opinion, is Audi’s 3.0 liter Supercharged V6 which is a brilliant engine. And the only cabin that comes close is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class’ which is more luxurious but lacks some of the ergonomics and quality of the 5er’s.

However, the folks at C&D were a bit disappointed with the 540i’s steering feel. While its handling actually impressed them, besting their skidpad best on all-season tires (with the only cars in the class beating it wearing summer tires), they weren’t as pleased with the steering feel. The steering is extremely accurate and weights up nicely through corners, something they do mention. However, they felt that it’s completely devoid of any sort of feel.

When you compare it to the E39-generation, yes, it lacks feel. However, C&D mentions that BMW does this intentionally, though, as customers simply do not want steering feel anymore, they want isolation and comfort. So BMW gives them what they want. It’s just the way of the world. If you want steering feel, get an E39. If you want a modern luxury car that’s superb at literally everything else and handles very well, get the new G30.
