Fans of wagons have been drooling after a high-performance offering from BMW for quite some time. To be more precise, such a model has been missing from the Bavarian manufacturer’s line-up since the E61 M5 went out of production and it’s been seven years since then. With the launch of the new BMW M5 people hoped that the Touring body could once again be combined with the M5 badge but unfortunately for everyone, that’s not going to be the case.
Even so, that doesn’t stop us from imagining just how awesome a presumable F91 M5 Touring BMW would look like and some have actually even put together renderings of how it could turn out. The first picture of such a contraption comes from X-Tomi Design, with the Hungarian artist mixing the body of a 5 Series Touring with the wheels and bumpers of a BMW M5. His end result looks exactly as you’d expect a Touring F91 M5 to look like in real life.
That’s also mostly because the new M5 followed the same old recipe in terms of design. The biggest changes were done to the bumpers, the rest of the car remains almost identical to the standard version of the 5 Series. Sure, there are some different character lines on the hood and roof but they don’t make a huge difference overall. What’s most important hides beneath the sheet metal and in that regard, the M5 doesn’t play around.
Even though customers loving a wagon can’t get it with the M5 badge on it, BMW in collaboration with Alpina does offer the next best thing, the BMW Alpina B5 Biturbo Touring. Thanks to the revised 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 under the hood and the new xDrive system, the B5 BiTurbo is now faster than the old M5 so it could easily help you quench that speed thirst while also hauling a lot of luggage for your family’s needs. Sure, it’s not an M5, but it’s the closest thing to it, with 608 PS, 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque and a 0-62 mph sprint of 3.7 seconds.
