Eight Things To Know About the Range Rover Velar

Range Rover has added a new vehicle to its portfolio: the Velar. It sits between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport and will rival the Porsche Macan, Jaguar F-Pace and BMW X4. While the reveal took place in London yesterday, the Velar will make its show debut at the Geneva Auto Show next month. And here are eight things you should know about it.

Exterior

The Velar adopts an evolutionary design language. The front and rear fascias are easily distinguishable from any other Range Rover model- it’s not as boxy as the rest and the body lines are sharper. It also gets a coupe-esque roofline but not as prominent as the ones on the BMW X6 or the Mercedes GLE Coupe.

There are well-sculpted LED Matrix headlamps that offer a visibility of up to 550 mm at night, LED tail-lamps, copper accents on the side vents, front air vents and the hood, option for up to 22-inch wheels and in a first for Range Rover, retractable door handles.

Dimensions

Against the tape, the Velar measures 4803 mm in length, 2145 mm in width and 1665 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2874 mm and the gross weight ranges from 2470 kg to 2610 kg (depending on the variant).

Cabin Tech

The Velar previews the next generation of car interior from Land Rover.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is similar to the Audi Virtual Cockpit and gets four different views. Meanwhile, on the center console you have what Range Rover calls, its “Touch Pro Duo” infotainment system. It consists of two 10-inch touchscreens. The upper one is for navigation, music and phone. While, other features, such as the climate control, seat massage system and terrain settings can be accessed via the lower screen.

Other noteworthy elements inside the cabin include touchscreen pads on the steering wheel, Meridian sound system and panoramic sunroof.

Non-Leather Upholstery

The Velar is offered with a non-leather upholstery option called “Premium Textile”. The latter has been developed with Scandinavian company, Kvadrat, and uses wool blend fabric and suede cloth (made from recycled plastic bottles) for the seats.

Engine Options

Range Rover has announced five engine configurations for the Velar: three diesel and two petrol.

For the diesel, there is a 2.0-liter Ingenium motor offered in two states of tune: 180 HP/430 Nm and 240 HP/500 Nm. For those wanting more power, they can pick the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that makes 300 HP and 700 Nm of torque- enough for a sprint of 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.

For the petrolheads, there is the 2.0-liter four-pot turbocharged Ingenium engine that makes 250 HP and 365 Nm of torque. And a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that puts out 380 HP and 450 Nm of torque, helping for a 0-100 time of 5.7 seconds. AWD is standard on all models and so is an 8-speed automatic gearbox with paddle-shifters.

SVO Treatment?

Early reports indicate that the Velar could get a high-performance variant tuned by the SVO division.

IQ Platform

The Velar is based on the same platform as the F-Pace, which means the body structure is 82 percent aluminum. There’s a double-wishbone suspension set-up on the front and a integral-link set-up on the rear. There are lots of electronic aides- Terrain Response 2 system (with different modes for different terrains), active locking rear differential, torque vectoring and more.

Air Suspension

The air suspension automatically lowers the ride height by 10 mm at above 105 km/h to improve handling and by 40 mm before you get out of the vehicle for comfort. Furthermore, it provides a ground clearance of up to 251 mm if needed.
