More spy photos of the upcoming BMW F90 M5

We can’t get enough of the upcoming BMW F90 M5. I don’t think you can blame us for being so excited about the next-generation M5, as the car on it’s built upon, the G30-generation 5 Series, is an exceptional one. The chassis is brilliant and the technology is superb. Just driving the new BMW 540i impressed us, so we’re absolutely giddy over the prospect of the new M5.

Some new spy photos have been given to us of the upcoming M5 driving around in Munich, along with several other cars we’ve reported seeing today. While the camouflage sort of covers any distinctive differences between the M5 and the standard 5 Series, we can tell that it looks more menacing. The fenders seem flared out and the ride is significantly lower. You can tell almost immediately that this is a BMW M5 and that’s a good thing. Its quad exhausts also give it away.

We haven’t even driven the M5’s smaller sibling, the BMW M550i, yet but we’re expecting the M5 to be a couple of steps ahead of it, in terms of performance. Under the hood of the M5 will be a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 that will make about 600 hp. That mighty engine will power all four wheels via an M-tuned variant of the brand’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. Routing power to the wheels will be an eight-speed automatic gearbox, rather than the seven-speed DCT, as the latter can’t handle the torque nor is capable of sending power to four wheels.

If the BMW M550i, with its 456 hp, is faster than the recently departed F10-generation BMW M5, thanks to its all-wheel drive system and clever torque management, this new BMW M5 should be an absolute monster. The M550i can do a sub-4 second 0-60 mph time with only 456 hp and all-wheel drive. What will the F90 M5, with its 600 hp, same transmission and all-wheel drive be able to do?

We don’t know but we do know that we can’t wait to find out.
