2018 BMW X2 prototypes out for more testing

When it comes to market next year, the new BMW X2 is shaping up to be one of the best looking BMWs ever designed by Munich. The BMW X2 was previewed in concept form at the Paris Motor Show in 2016 and shortly after, prototypes have hit the road for some real-life testing, just months before its debut in production shape.

These latest spy photos hail from Munich where an X2 prototype was seen last week during public road testing sessions. From the front end, the X1 resemblance is obvious, yet the design is sportier and more refined.

Even in profile, it isn’t much different looking than the X1, without seeing the two side-by-side. It’s when you really get to see the tucked rear end and more aggressive roofline toward the C-pillar. When you see it next to the X1, though, you can really see the differences. It does seem like a handsome crossover, with sportier looks than the already good-looking X1.

You can also see that it’s a lot smaller than the X1. Its roofline is quite a bit lower and it’s even narrower.

Powering the X2 will be your typical BMW turbocharged three and four-cylinder engines. In Europe, expect the 1.5 liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.0 liter diesel in the base cars. From there, there will be the new B48 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which will be the top of the line model and likely the only US model, if we get one at all.

Base cars in Europe could see a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with the Aisin-sourced eight-speed auto as an option. The latter will be standard on higher trim models and in the US, much like the current X1.
