During the late ’60s and early ’70s, BMW built a few different cars on the E9 chassis. All of the were stunning cars. The first of which was the BMW 2800 CS, a car that combined gorgeous styling, a delightful engine and lovely handling in one package. It was one of the best grand touring cars in the world at the time.
This particular 1970 BMW 2800 CS looks to be in fantastic shape with low mileage. But the beauty of it is that it doesn’t seem to be absolutely perfect. It’s not that there’s any signs of damage or issues, it’s in gorgeous shape, but it looks like the sort of car you can drive everyday. It’s not a garage queen. Car nerds like me will also note the complete tool kit in the trunk, which is awesome.
On the inside, the blue interior looks great and the wood trim is in great shape, with no cracks. I love the thin wood-rimmed steering wheel and the wood shift knob. This is the sort of car I can see cruising down some windy coastal roads. Stunning thing.
Under the hood was a 2.8 liter I6 carbureted engine (don’ you miss when the car’s name represented its displacement?) that sounded brilliant. It made 170 hp and 173 lb-ft of torque which wasn’t a ton, even at the time, but enough to be enjoyable. But this car isn’t about straight-line speed or performance, it was about being a brilliant grand tourer.
Personally, I’ve always been a huge fan of all E9 BMWs. Obviously the 3.0 CSL is the best of the bunch but this 2800 CS offers the same stunning looks at a much lower price. This specific car only costs $48,000, which isn’t too much for a car of this caliber. It looks brilliant, sounds fantastic and is one of the best GT cars of its era. It’s hard to beat that package for the price.
