The BMW 8 Series is no longer a rumor, or a silent whisper among enthusiasts wishing for a revival of the badge. No, the BMW 8 Series is coming and the concept BMW unveiled at this year’s Villa d’Este speaks of big grills, wide air intakes and powerful curves all around its body. Sure, the production model probably will be a bit more toned down but overall, we can expect the general lines to be kept and that’s great news.
The sad part is that the 6 Series range will no longer be available as we know it. BMW actually has done this before, when the original 6 Series and 8 Series were out, more than 30 years ago. As a matter of fact, when the first 8 Series was introduced, the 6 Series range as a whole was put on the back-burner, probably in order to avoid cannibalizing sales. It will be the same story in the 21st century and that means the beautiful 6 Series Gran Coupe will be no longer.
The 2-door Coupe has apparently already gone out of production and the Convertible and Gran Coupe will follow soon, leaving room for cars with the same body style but different nameplates to come out of the assembly lines. Today, we’re taking a look at what may very well be the best looking upcoming model in the 8 Series range, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, in rendering guise. Blessed with two extra doors compared to its Coupe brother, the Gran Coupe is noticeably longer and, to my eyes, even more appealing.
If you, as myself, find yourself desperately attracted to this machine and madly in love with it, the bad news is that you’ll have to wait a considerable amount of time before actually seeing the production version. That’s because BMW will probably launch it at least one year after the 2-door Coupe and that places the official unveiling somewhere in 2019. However, surprises have happened before, and the recent showing of the BMW M8 is one of them, even if it happened under a hefty amount of camouflage. What’s certain is that we know for sure that a Gran Coupe will exist and that’s music to our ears.
