Just earlier today we told you that the CEO of Alpina Automobiles said, in a recent interview, that the offerings of his company don’t really rival those from the BMW M division. However, some people just can’t grasp the difference between the two and so, comparisons are inevitable. The latest comes from the guys over at MotorTrend that took the fastest car Alpina has to offer and threw it against the BMW M6 Gran Coupe.
Typically shoppers don’t look at both these models when in the market for a new Gran Coupe. The borders are set from the beginning and while the B6 Gran Coupe is the better luxury/comfort four-door coupe model, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe will definitely smoke it on the track. This difference might not be apparent from looking at the spec sheet though as the Alpina is considerably faster from standstill to 60 mph.
And yet, the differences are in these cars’ DNA. From the get go you know that the M division was looking to offer an incredible level of excitement behind the wheel of the Gran Coupe on the track and made it the more poised version of the two in the process. That’s highlighted not only by the lap times recorded by Randy Pobst here but also by the manufacturing process that includes different axles, bushings and suspension systems altogether.
On the other hand, the Alpina may have 600 HP and more torque as well as all-wheel drive but it still can’t hold a match to the M6 on the track. Of course, the question that naturally pops up is whether you will ever track these two and this is where our initial premise repeats itself. Customers don’t cross shop these two. Someone looking for fast off the line get go, luxury and comfort, will definitely swerve towards the B6 or the B7. Someone who also wants to enjoy his ride on the back roads and the track, will be going for the M6 with all the downsides showed by the guys from MotorTrend over the following 20 minutes.
