AutoGuide compares the BMW M2 vs Shelby GT350

We really do live in the golden era of performance cars. There are just so many great cars on the market from so many different brands, even brands you wouldn’t normally think of. When you can get either a BMW or Mustang that can both get from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and both cost roughly the same, you know we’ve hit the pinnacle of the performance automobile. Those two cars are the BMW M2 and Shelby GT350.

While they’re two very different cars, they both achieve the same goal — to put a huge you-know-what-eating grin on your face. With 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0 liter turbo-I6 engine, the BMW M2 is the lightweight, dynamic car of the duo. On the other hand, the Shelby GT350, with its massive 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque from its 5.0 liter flat-plane crank V8, is like riding an atom bomb. Both cars are so extremely different but they’re both incredibly fun to drive.

But which is the better car? AutoGuide decided to find out. What a hardship that must have been.

The BMW M2 is the more precise, more delicate car of the two. It’s smooth and responsive, with sharp turn-in and agile moves. The 3.0 liter I6 is also silky smooth and makes a great, growly noise. It’s also the more comfortable car to drive everyday, with better technology and cushier seats. However, when the road gets twisty, the M2 is an absolute riot.

As for the Shelby GT350, it’s not as delicate. In its driving style, it’s more of a brute. It’s much larger than the M2, heavier as well. And it feels it from behind the wheel, as the Shelby is more difficult to accurately place and isn’t as much of a momentum car. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun. It’s freaking hilarious. That 5.0 liter flat-plane crank V8 is one of the best engines of the planet, from any company, as makes some of the best noises of any engine on the planet. Oh, and it revs to 8,250 rpm. Having driven the GT350 myself, I can attest to this being one of the most enjoyable engine in the world to drive.

In the end, AutoGuide can’t make a decision. Admittedly, it’s a very tough decision because both meals are equally delicious, just have different flavors. However, if we were to have to choose, it would be the M2 and that isn’t just bias. The M2 is better at more things. While the Shelby will feel more special, even at low speeds, it can be a bit of a chore to drive around town, as its engine really doesn’t like low revs. The M2 is easier to drive around town and can be more of an everyday car. However, when it comes to driving hard, it’s nigh impossible to pick between the two.
