To BMW fans, especially in North America, ALPINA is a rare delicacy. ALPINA manufactures some of the most high-performance, luxurious and interesting BMW variants in the world. It’s been doing so since 1965 and has developed some truly wonderful cars. Even today, they still turn heads on the road, as they’re so incredibly rare and interesting. But what’s even rarer than an ALPINA BMW? An ALPINA BMW Wagon. And that’s exactly what we have here.
This lovely E39-based ALPINA B10 V8 Touring started life as a standard BMW E39 540i Touring. But ALPINA added some power to that V8 and increased its displacement. Instead of the 4.4 liter V8 in the standard 540i, it’s been bumped it up to 4.6 liters, among other things, which gave it 347 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. And that’s all naturally-aspirated power, long before the days of everything with a roundel being turbocharged. So all of that power comes on in a perfectly silky-smooth manner. It only came with an automatic gearbox and powered only its rear wheels.
Only a couple hundred of these cars were made back in the day, but only 10 made it to the UK. That makes it incredibly rare across the pond, which makes this particular car even more desirable.
With only 73,000 miles on the odometer, this 1999 ALPINA B10 V8 Touring is in fantastic condition. The paint looks great, the interior is in excellent shape and, with such low mileage, there’s very little wear on the engine. The classic Dark Sapphire Blue Metallic paint color looks great on the E39 Touring, especially with those stunning wheels. While beige isn’t my personal favorite interior color, it works here and looks good.
Right now, the seller is asking $23,228, which isn’t so bad for such a rare car. That’s about how much an excellent example E39 BMW M5 would go for and this is significantly rarer than the M5 and, in my opinion, more desirable. You almost never see ALPINAs on the road. But an ALPINA wagon? Might as well be a unicorn.
