BMW essentially created the coupe-like SUV with the BMW X6. It was a car that remained virtually uncontested until the debut of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. Now, those two cars pretty much remain the only competition in their class. However, Land Rover is readying a rival to both of those cars in the form of a new Range Rover.
Recent spy photos of the Range Rover, internally known as the Evoque Plus, have emerged and it looks about as coupe-y as a Range Rover is going to get. We don’t have them ourselves, but you can check them out here.
It’s said that Land Rover is working on something sportier with less off-road prowess. This coupe-like Range Rover will be lower and wider than anything in the brand’s current range. While it doesn’t look as aggressive as a BMW X6, it is sportier looking than a tradition Range Rover.
The roof does seem to taper off towards the rear, which will limit headroom but give it a more aggressive look. Apparently, Land Rover is also going to be stealing styling cues from the Jaguar F-Pace, but I don’t see it. Although, the interior is supposed to be far more sports car-like than truck-like. This will be a large departure from a brand that’s built its reputation on rugged off-road capability.
Range Rover Sport SVR
It’s somewhat disappointing to hear Land Rover trying to stray from its roots and pander to the current SUV market. We expect it from typical luxury automakers who must try and fill every competitive niche possible, but Land Rover is a specialty brand. Land Rovers and Range Rovers are the sort of trucks that you buy if you want rugged capability along with your luxury. Or if you’re a Kardashian.
In Land Rover’s defense, people scoffed at the idea of a Jaguar F-Pace and that turned out really well. So maybe, if this new Range Rover Coupe-thing borrows some F-Pace DNA, it may just be able to compete with the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. But one thing’s for certain, BMW is not longer going to be able to sit uncontested in this segment, as it’s becoming far more popular than ever before.
