BMW’s E34 generation of the M5 doesn’t get as much love as it should. I think it had a hard time following the incredibly impressive act of its E28 generation predecessor. However, the E34 BMW M5 was still a good car and one worth owning for many BMW enthusiasts. Especially this one.
This owner has a 1993 E34 BMW M5 for sale, but it isn’t just any ordinary M5. In fact, this is one of the most extreme E34 M5 builds we’ve ever seen. The engine that came with the 1993 E34 M5 in North America was a 3.6 liter inline-six engine that developed 311 hp. This owner, however, replace that engine with the S70/B56 5.6 liter V12 engine from the BMW 850CSi, which develops 420 hp. That’s a significant bump in both size and power for the M5 and should make it a tire-eating monster.
But this owner didn’t stop there, as the standard five-speed manual was replaced with a six-speed Getrag 560G gearbox with a UUC short-throw shifter kit. To put all of that power down to the road, a Quaife limited-slip differential was installed. Two-piece brake rotors with four-piston calipers were also installed to help slow this V12-powered beast down. EDC III self-leveling dampers were added along with H&R springs, new sway bars and a strut tower brace. It also sports an Eisenman exhaust system to round it all off.
This isn’t your average BMW M5 build, as it’s a seriously comprehensive performance upgrade all the way around. Not only is there far more power than stock, but it has upgraded brakes, suspension and even a very high-end Quaife differential. This is a serious machine that’s probably an absolute blast to drive.
And it wasn’t done by some Average Joe in his garage. This owner took the M5 to Koala Motorsport in Cleveland OH who built this car up to what it is now. The M5 only had about 73,000 miles on it when it was finished being built and only has around 79,000 miles on it now. So it’s still fairly new and it looks to be in superb condition. The only signs of wear are the fading of the Diamond Swartz Metallic paint on the roof and trunk. However, that’s not that uncommon after the sun has been beating down on that roof for 23 years. The classic throwing star wheels are also present and always look cool on ’90s BMWs.
The interior also looks great and very stock, except for the shorty shifter. The seats are in fantastic condition and the dash and door panels have held up well for 23 years. The leather seats are manually-adjustable and look to not have even a bit of wear on them. Admittedly, that trim is pretty hideous, but that’s just terrible ’90s styling and not the car’s fault.
Overall, this is one of the coolest E34 M5 builds we’ve ever seen because it isn’t flashy and it isn’t ridiculous but all of its upgrades were serious, high-quality performance upgrades that will make this car a blast to drive for years to come. Its monster V12 engine will supply enough torque and power to roast its rear tires on command while making an awesome noise. Paired with a six-speed gearbox and a proper Quaife diff and this thing will be hilarious good fun to drive. For $16,500, this is a pretty good buy for anyone who’s looking for an already built E34 BMW M5 to mess around with. It’s not cheap for a 23 year old car, but if you’d be hard pressed to find another V12-powered BMW sedan with a six-speed manual, Quaife diff and Eisenmen exhaust for cheaper.
