Not long ago BMW announced that it will be replacing its N57S engine with a new one, based on the B57 family of diesels. For most people that all sounds way too complicated, especially for people living in the US, where diesel BMWs are a bit of a taboo subject. However, that was great news for Europeans that seem to love the BMW M550d and all other M50d iterations the Germans have on offer.
To be more precise the N57S engine used to be the world’s most powerful production 3-liter diesel engine up until recently. Thanks to its tri-turbo configuration, the mill was good for 381 HP and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque that transformed the M550d xDrive model into a proper rival even for the F10 M5. Considering the current M car isn’t offered in Touring guise but the M550d is, this is still a rather obvious choice for those looking for a lot of power, more practicality than inside a 5 Series Sedan and some frugality on top of everything.
The Cartech-modified model we’re showing you today is using that exact engine but it was tuned to make even more power, reaching 457 HP and 888 Nm (655 lb-ft) of torque. Remember, that’s from a 3-liter diesel engine! Those figures are even better than what the new B57 quad-turbo mill is putting down, at 400 HP and 760 Nm (561 lb-ft). What’s peculiar is that BMW is claiming that the figures could’ve been higher but they were restricted by the gearbox. However, the car we’re showing you is still using the standard ZF 8-speed transmission.
On top of the engine tune, this family cruiser/bruiser also received a set of blacked out 20-inch Flow Form HRE wheels wrapped in Dunlop tires along with H&R springs to keep things in check at higher speeds. Since the standard BMW M550d xDrive Touring model reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds, we’re guessing this beast will do the same in about 4.5 seconds, pretty close to what the M5 can do.
