BMW swaps 30i and 40i models in 2, 3, and 4 Series lineup

2016 BMW 340i 40 Year Edition available in South Africa-5

BMW’s new family of engines is coming to the U.S. lineup. The new modular engine architecture is the basis for three-, four-, and six-cylinder engines, and are just as powerful as the current powerplants, and more fuel efficient.

BMW calls its latest 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine B48, and the new single-turbo six is the B58. The B48 2.0 liter four-cylinder unit will replace the N20 engine and will be featured in the 30i models. The B58 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine replaces the N55 workhorse and will be found under the hood of 40i cars.

The 228i and M235i names are replaced by 230i and M240i models. The four-cylinder makes 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and the B58 makes 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Both the 340i Sedan and 340i Gran Turismo are using the 335 hp B58 unit, while the 328i models is replaced by the B48 and the 330i badges.

All the 4 Series variants – coupe, Gran Coupe and Convertible models – are now getting the 440i badge and the B58 powerplant.
