Part of a lineup reshuffling in 2019, the 1 Series and 2 Series families will join forces and give birth to new variants, while losing others. One of those new models is a 2 Series Gran Coupe and its M2 Gran Coupe sporty version to take the challenge to the upcoming Audi RS3 sedan and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45.
While the RS3 and CLA 45 are front-wheel based, the M2 Gran Coupe will feature a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, following in the steps of the extremely popular M2 Coupe.
With the next-generation 3 Series sedan set to grow in size by up to 7 cm, the BMW bosses believe there is room below the M3/M4 models for a sleek looking and sporty four-door coupe.
No design details are known at the moment, but two options were allegedly on the table – the aforementioned four-door coupe layout and a more radical five-door liftback. Insiders say BMW might have settled on the four-door option for structural rigidity.
The need to accommodate two conventional front-hinged rear doors and sufficient rear seat leg room is said to be behind the decision to give the new car a wheelbase that is halfway between the 2690mm span of the 2 Series Coupé and the 2810mm of the existing 3 Series saloon.
Set for launch in 2019, the M2 Gran Coupe will output 365 hp from a turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine. It will be offered in combination with either a standard six-speed manual or seven-speed dualclutch automatic gearbox.
