BMW is preparing a sports car rival for the Porsche 911 and at the same time, it plans to phase out the current 6 Series in favor of a new 8 Series. According to our sources, BMW is looking to move into a higher-end market developing a four-door coupe – and potentially other variants – to compete with the likes of S-Class Coupe.

In late March it applied to strengthen its control of a string of 8 Series-related names, including 825, 830, 835, 850, 845, 860 and M850.

With the new 8 Series just around the corner, there will be a void in the BMW lineup where the current 6 Series currently sits. Our sources say BMW is hatching a radical plan to realign its 6 Series model as a smaller, more agile sports car.v

BMW has not contemplated a Porsche 911 rival before but the new Mercedes-AMG GT’s arrival as a competitor to the 911 has changed that. It’s unknown at the moment whether BMW will market the new sports car as a 6 Series or will simply use a new badge on the trunk.

The renderings created by AutoExpress show a sporty BMW with the proportions and looks of an Aston Martin, while retaining the typical BMW design cues. The new sports car is likely to feature a large displacement with a lot of horsepower under the hood.
