Ahh, Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love. Home to Rocky Balboa, the Eagles and drunkenly throwing broken beer bottles at children because they were wearing sports jerseys from another state’s team. But it’s also now home to a very rare 1990 BMW Z1 for sale.
In today’s edition of Jalopnik’s famous “Nice Price or Crack Pipe” segment, we take a look at this very rare BMW Z1 for sale in Philly. Now, it’s almost impossible to find a BMW Z1 in the US, as none were officially sold in North America. However, a few did make their way over here as imports. The BMW Z1 was only in production from 1989 until 1991, so not many were built, but the few that got one are holding onto one of BMW’s most interesting cars.
With a bespoke chassis, plastic body panels and the same 2.5 liter I6 engine and 5-speed manual gearbox from the E30 325i, the BMW Z1 was extremely light and fun to drive. It also had a bespoke multi-link “Z-Axle” rear suspension. But it’s real party trick was its slide-down door design. Instead of opening outward, like every other automotive door, whether it be out or up, the BMW Z1’s doors slid down into the body of the car, allowing passengers to step over and into it. This allowed for top-down, door-down driving.
This 1990 example is one of those few and is currently for sale with an asking price of $27,000. Almost thirty large can seem a bit steep for a 26 year old two-seater convertible smaller than a Z3, especially one that’s a bit worn, such as this example. In fact, there’s quite a lot of little stuff to mend on this Z1. There are some cracks in the paint, some minor bubbling from rust and what seems to be a bit of a broken body panel by the trick slide down doors.
However, it only has about 60,000 miles on it which, considering the car’s age, isn’t bad at all. Though, this does mean that the previous owner(s) didn’t take as good of care of it as they should have. But, if given the right owners and a bit of cash and elbow grease, this BMW Z1 could be a real gem in the future. While almost $30,000 is a lot to spend on an old car that needs work, if you can get the price down enough to where you’re comfortable and willing to spend the extra time and money restoring this car, you’ll have a really cool classic car on your hands that would make summer days a blast.
