The launch of the current BMW 7 Series brought forward a lot of new technology customers definitely appreciate but it also brought forward performance figures like never before. To some extent that was to be expected, as every new flagship does come with extensive improvements in all departments compared to its predecessors. However, it felt like the Alpina B7 Biturbo took things to a whole new level when it was unveiled.
The car based on the 750Li model comes with all-wheel drive as standard but also with a heavily reworked version of the N63 4.4-liter V8 engine under the hood. In standard guise, on the BMW 750Li, this engine is known to make 450 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque and it will launch the limousine to 62 mph from standstill in 4.7 seconds. That’s even faster when you thrown xDrive in the mix cutting 0.2 seconds off the sprint time or you can go even faster if you go for the short wheelbase version with xDrive clocked at 4.4 seconds.
And while those numbers look absolutely incredible on paper for a limousine of this size – be it long or short wheelbase – they are nothing compared to what Alpina managed to do. The B7 Biturbo does get its roots from the 750i model but the engine has been so drastically reworked that it makes over 600 HP and 800 Nm (559 lb-ft) of torque now, numbers on par with the figures the M760Li xDrive model obtains out of a 6.6-liter V12 engine.
Therefore the sprint to the benchmark speed takes just 3.7 seconds yet again on par with the aforementioned M Performance Car. And yet, those are just numbers on paper. The real reason why some people go for an Alpina and not a BMW 7 Series hides inside the cabin and in the way the suspension is set up, as Carlos Lagos carefully explains in the review posted below.
