EVO Magazine delivers their impressions on three of the hottest sport coupes on the market. The BMW M4 Competition Package is pitted against the Audi RS5 and Mercedes-AMG C63 S. Under the hood of the new Audi RS5 lies a 2.9 liter twin-turbo V6 that makes a very healthy 444 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. Those figures make it just about tied with the BMW M4 Competition Package. However, its performance figures are right there with all of them. From 0-60 mph, the RS5 takes 3.9 seconds, says Audi. It should also do 0-100 mph in about 8 seconds, which is properly quick. It’s also exactly as fast to 60 mph as the M4 Competition Package.
The AMG C63 S, in S trim, uses a 4.0-liter V-8 delivering an impressive 503 horsepower at 6200 rpm, 516 lb-ft of torque from 1750 to 4500 rpm. Zero to 60 mph is rated at 3.8 sec while reaching 100 mph from standstill takes 8.3 seconds.
In EVO review, the three coupes were tracked on the Venue Bedford Autodrome where the following results were recorded:
- Mercedes-AMG C63 S 1:25.6 minutes
- Audi RS5 1:25.0 minutes
- BMW M4 Competition Package 1:23.4 minutes
In the standard test, the C63 S gets to 60mph in 4.3sec, which is a few tenths behind Merc’s claim of 3.9 sec to 62 but an impressive achievement when you consider the C63 tips our scales at a portly 1847kg. The M4 is far trimmer, weighing in at just 1645kg. This helps explain why it’s just a tenth slower to 60mph than the C63, despite a 59bhp power deficit. The RS5 delivers a 0 to 60mph result of 3.6sec.
Here is what EVO had to say about the M4 CP:
So where does that leave the M4? Way out in front is the short answer. It’s taken BMW a while, but this 2018MY Competition Package version is the car the M4 should have been from the start. From its near-perfect weight distribution to its pared-back kerb weight, the fast and fun BMW feels like a car that’s been developed with the driver’s best interests at heart. ‘It has an authenticity to it that cuts through the challenge of the other two,’ says Towler. ‘It shines brightly pretty much all the time. Whatever the mood, whatever the journey, the M4 feels like an event, like a real performance car, like a car to covet and treasure.’ Like a winner.
