BMW i5 Patents possibly leaked

BMW i5 Rendering

Rumors are constantly circulating about the next production vehicle from BMW’s now-famous i Division. It’s all but confirmed that the next BMW i vehicle will be the BMW i5. What exactly that will be is still unknown, though we have a pretty good idea. However, a possible recent leak shows BMW’s patents for the BMW i5 and we get a good look at what it will be. We don’t own the images, so you can see them here.

In these patent images, we get a digital look at the upcoming BMW i5. It’s a lot like we expected it to be, but somewhat disappointing, to be honest. It clearly borrows a lot of its design from both the BMW i3 and i8, with the rear end being almost entirely i3 and the front end having a lot of i8 in it. However, it has the overall shape of a Toyota Prius and that’s not a good thing. Hopefully BMW’s joint-venture with Toyota isn’t rubbing off on the Bavarians too much.

While there are certain aspects of this patent car that look good, the overall design is not good. This does not look like the sort of premium vehicle BMW should be making and instead looks like something of a Toyota Prius/Chevy Bolt offspring. It also has Tesla Model S door handles. If BMW wants to get more people on board with the i Division, this design isn’t going to cut it.

We have no official word as to whether or not these patent designs are accurate, so don’t take them as fact. However, it isn’t impossible. But without anything confirmed, this is also just rumor. It also goes against the previous rumor we’ve heard about the i5 being an SUV. We won’t know for sure until at least 2020, though.
