Tesla is an interesting company. It draws some of the world’s most passionate and loyal fans as well as some of the world’s biggest haters. It’s probably the most polarizing automotive brand and could be considered the ‘Apple’ of cars. Its Model S is the brand’s most popular vehicle, despite the Model X being newer (probably because the latter is hideous and has human-eating doors that don’t work properly). So the Silicon Valley-based brand has debuted a new variant of its most popular car — the Tesla Model S P100D.
If you don’t understand Tesla lingo, the ‘P’ stands for Performance, the ‘100’ stands for the kWh (kilowatt hours) of its battery pack and the ‘D’ stands for dual, as in dual electric motors, one at the front axle and one at the rear. The Model S P100D is not only the fastest Tesla ever made, but it’s actually the fastest accelerating production car in the world right now. The only two cars to ever accelerate faster are the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. However, as Tesla is so quick to point out, neither of those cars are on sale anymore, so the Tesla sits atop the mountain alone.
If you’re wondering just how fast the Model S P100D accelerates, it can get from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. That’s simply ridiculous and hard to fathom. 2.5 seconds. It’s faster than a McLaren P1. It’s technically faster than gravity in a vacuum. It’s even faster than it takes for a vegan to bring up their veganism in conversation, if you can believe it. You get the point. The Model S P100D is hilariously, stupidly fast.
What’s more impressive is that it’s a family sedan, with seating for five and four doors. You can also supposedly stick two kids in those dingy jump seats in the trunk, but for some reason that seems ill advised. So if your kids are annoying you in the back seat, just stomp the accelerator pedal down and they won’t be able to speak, they’ll just be pinned to their seat, breathless for a few moments.
What’s even more impressive than that is its range. With a 100 kWh battery, the Model S P100D is capable of 315 miles of range. That makes it the first car in the world to have a 300-plus mile range, beating Audi’s e-tron Quattro to the punch by a couple of years. Obviously, you can’t accelerate that quickly and still achieve that range, as a couple of 2.5 second 0-60 runs will have the battery depleted in no time. But drive carefully enough, and the P100D will have as much range as your average sports car.
All of that tech isn’t cheap, though. At $121,500, the Model S P100D is one of the most expensive cars in its class. However, if you’re a Model S P90D Ludicrous buyer, but haven’t taken delivery yet, you can upgrade to the 100 kWh battery for $10,000. If you’re a P90D Ludicrous owner and already have your car, you can still upgrade but at $20,000 because Tesla has to recycle your old battery. Plus, you can’t find any production car faster at any price, especially one that can seat five adults, so it’s not actually bad value.
Aside from the new battery, nothing else is new about the Model S, so you still get that grille that looks like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix when he loses his mouth, the massive touch screen infotainment system and the brand’s Autopilot feature. The Tesla Model X also comes with the P100D battery now, as well. But that can only get from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, thanks to its extra mass. But that thing looks like a swollen jelly bean on wheels, so it doesn’t really matter how fast it goes, no one is going to think it’s cool.
Overall, the new Tesla Model S P100D is a very impressive, very fast, very high-tech car that completely eliminates range anxiety and can accelerate faster than literally anything in production at the moment.
