Frank Ocean is actually a long-time BMW fan

Frank Ocean is one of the more controversial hip-hop artists of the past few years. From getting into legal disputes with American rock band, The Eagles, to getting sued by the Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain, Ocean is not the most easily agreeable person in the music industry at the moment. However, Ocean is a massive gearhead and has a taste for BMW.

In nearly every album Ocean has released, there has been some reference to automotive culture. Whether it be the orange E30 M3 on the cover of his Nostalgia, Ultra album or the reference to a Mustang 5.0 in the song “American Wedding”. But it’s the Bavarian brand that Ocean likes the most. In fact, he even owns an E30 BMW, which he has had restored, modded and fitted for right-hand drive for some inexplicable reason. He also used to own an E39 540i Touring.

Ocean must have a strong love for E30 BMWs specifically, as it’s a car featured numerous times throughout his work, on top of him owning one. Especially considering that, at Ocean’s level of success right now, he could own nearly any car he desired. He does own a new M3 and I’m sure he owns a few of today’s more modern and luxurious cars. But his love of E30 BMW 3 Series models is still quite strong.

In fact, the white E30 sedan he has modded has been built into a sleeper of sorts. On the outside, it looks like a typical 1990 E30 3 Series sedan. I sort of even looks like a 318i. Nothing special at all. However, underneath the skin, it’s a monster. Ocean had whatever engine was in the car before swapped with an S54 engine from an E46 M3. It’s also been given a RMS Stage 2 Supercharger and a six-speed manual. While he never gave a reason to switch the E30 to right-hand drive, I guess he doesn’t really need on. It isn’t a smart idea, just ask Doug Demuro, but whatever, it’s his car.

It’s cool to see a celebrity not waste their money on cars they’ll never understand. The countless celebrities who roll around in Rolls-Royces, Ferraris and Porsches that have no idea, nor care to know how much work goes into each car, what its history is or what it’s about. They just buy them because they’re pretty and are status symbols.

But not Ocean. There may be things he does that you might not like, there may be things he says that annoys you, but you cannot deny the man’s love for E30 BMWs. And that’s something I think we can all support.
