Video: BMW 440i xDrive Gran Coupe Top Speed Run

It must be fun living in Germany, close to an unrestricted Autobahn which provides the perfect proving ground for the so-called ‘gentleman agreement’ between the major German car manufacturers which have deemed that 250 km/h (155 mph) is the perfect top speed for their cars. This electronic velocity limitation has been enforced for quite some time now, but for most people that’s a speed that’s impossible to reach without risking spending a couple of days in jail or at least a hefty fine. But when you’re behind the wheel of a BMW 440i Gran Coupe, that risk might seem worth taking.

When the 4 Series Gran Coupe, many were skeptic of its design and future success. However, soon after, everyone started wondering whether an M version would ever show up. Well, BMW made it quite clear from the get-go that the four-door coupe 4 Series model just isn’t a good candidate for an M4 Gran Coupe – It’s too heavy and doesn’t have the structural rigidity needed to keep its composure if fitted with a more powerful engine.

Be that as it may, while an M4 Gran Coupe sounds tantalizing because of the way it would look, the 440i xDrive model offers plenty of performance for daily driving. It comes with the 3-liter straight six B58 engine tuned to make 320 HP and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque, plenty for your needs. Due to the all-wheel drive system, the 4 Series Gran Coupe can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5 seconds flat which is noticeably slower than the equivalent 340i sedan but that’s all down to the weight.

As for the top speed, as I mentioned before, it’s limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) and you’re about to see it all unfold in the video below. Of course, the car’s speedometer does show a slightly different speed even when tapping out, but GPS speedometers should record the velocity more accurately.
