Video: 2019 BMW M5 vs Jeep Trackhawk Drag Race in the Cold

The new BMW M5 is getting delivered to the first customers worldwide as I’m writing this. That also means more and more reviews of the car are going to pop up online and a lot of weird tests are going to be done. The guys from The Fast Lane Car channel are the latest to take BMW’s newest autobahn bruiser out for a spin and, it so happened, they had another all-wheel drive car on the track that day and they decided to race the two against eachother.

However, before you watch the video and declare yourself surprised by the result, I should point out a couple of things that some of you might’ve already guessed or known, if you’re familiar with TFL Car. If this is the first time you’ve heard of them, you’ll probably be surprised to learn that they are based in Colorado and they usually test their cars at high altitude. That’s actually their USP and it worked in their favor as cars definitely tend to perform differently at high altitudes.

That also means their winters are longer than in the rest of the US and snow is a lot more common. As it so happened, during the filming of the BMW M5 taking on the Jeep Trackhawk, the conditions weren’t ideal, and that’s putting it mildly. Since the M5 comes standard with Pirelli P Zero high-performance tires, they won’t perform their best in the cold. The same could be said about the Jeep though and that’s a debate some people on the internet will surely have.

At the same time, the TFL Car crew is known to have an issue with BMW’s Launch Control activation sequence. According to them, it’s ‘impossible’ to activate Launch Control but that’s far from true, especially since on the new M5 you don’t have the old 7-speed DCT gearbox and therefore, the launch sequence has been simplified a lot. The Trackhawk, on the other hand, also had a hard time launching, as the brakes couldn’t hold the 707 HP still long enough to properly launch. In the end, the drag race shown here is like watching two athletes racing with their shoelaces tied up. It’s still interesting to see how the two compare.
