The new BMW X2 was just unveiled, but the usual question wasn’t far behind – Will BMW build an M model based on the new SUV? Latest signs point only to an M Performance model, but that hasn’t stopped rendering artists from dreaming of an X2 M from Garching.
The rendering follows the typical M design, with a more aggressive front fascia enhanced by the large air intakes and more sculpted bumper. From the side, one can easily spot the flared fenders which house larger wheels while the car is being lowered to the ground. As with most BMW M cars, a carbon roof was fitted to the X2 M, while behind the wheels a set of M brakes are hidden.
And while the X2 M project is unlikely to ever come to life – mostly because of the front-wheel drive architecture in the X2 – the X3 M Performance is apparently being considered in Munich. A new version of the turbo four-cylinder BMW B48 with a displacement of 2.0 liters will be used, which has already been under development for some time. The BMW X2 M35i is rumored to deliver around 300 horsepower.
The base X2 is offered with three trim levels – Basic, M Sport and M Sport X. “Basic” is, well, the basic BMW X2. “M Sport” adds some sportier bits, much like any M Sport BMW, such as dark shadow accents, with side skirts and wheel arch trim in body color. The new “M Sport X” trim level supposedly brings accents from both M Sport and X Line trims. So it looks like an X2 M Sport but with its side skirts, bumper and wheel arch trim in Frozen Grey.
Powering the BMW X2 will be the typical suite of small four-cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel. So there will be a BMW X2 xDrive18i, xDrive20i, xDrive20d and xDrive25d. The US market gets an X2 xDrive28i model.
The launch of the BMW X2 is scheduled for Spring 2018.
