Going fast around a track doesn’t solely require a car made to handle its tricky layout. No, going fast around a track require, first of all, knowledge. As is the case with almost everything in life, knowledge will get you further than strength in any given scenario and when talking about race cars, that’s truer than ever. That’s the best explanation for what the video posted below showcases, where a Competition Package BMW M4 manages to harass a McLaren 675LT on the Ring.
Looking at the two cars independently and on paper, this would seem like lunacy. The supercar from Woking comes prepared with racing pedigree and more of everything. The engine is a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 making 675 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Tipping the scale at just under 1.4 tons, the McLaren is also lighter than the BMW, being basically the fastest car in the line-up of the British manufacturer, just below the manic P1 hypercar.
On the other hand we’re dealing with what is basically a slightly modified BMW M4. The Competition Package does indeed raise the power output of the 3-liter straight six engine under the hood but only by 19 HP to 450 HP. The torque figure remains unchanged at 550 Nm (406 lb-ft), all of it sent to the rear wheel through the 7-speed DCT gearbox in this case. The suspension was also stiffened up and lowered but even so, the M4 shouldn’t be able to keep up with a proper supercar, especially on a track.
And yet, here’s where knowledge steps in. The biggest difference between these two cars here sits right behind the wheel. Whereas the driver of the McLaren seems to be going around the Nurburgring for the first time, the one behind the wheel of the M4 knows it like the back of his hand. The result? Well, you can check for yourself in the video below.
