The BMW M4 GTS is a stunning, no compromises machine, meant for serious track work for the well heeled, hardcore BMW enthusiasts. In fact, in the United States, there was a screening process just in order to be able to purchase one. A mere 700 BMW M4 GTS models were made for the world, of which only 300 came to the United States.

BMWBLOG had a chance to run with a BMW M4 GTS in our run group on a track while we were attending a recent BMW CCA Driving School at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. We met with the owner to get his impression.

Over the weekend he ran a total of 343 track miles and averaged a whopping 7 miles per gallon! Gulp! As the BMW M4 GTS uses water injection in order to crank out 493 hp out of a 3.0L inline-six cylinder turbo, the owner noted that the M4 GTS used 2.5 gallons of distilled water during the weekend’s track laps.

According to the owner, a second set of wheels and tires was necessary because the week he was breaking it in, the rain was consistently coming down. For his rain tires, the M4 GTS owner runs Michelin Pilot Super Sport on the factory flame orange wheels and for the track he runs a set of BMW M Carbon Compound Carbon Fiber Performance Wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

The orange splitter was set forward for track duty. He also installed a G-Force 5 point harness to the factory bucket seats as BMW of North America couldn’t import the harness they offer in Europe. A fire extinguisher was also fitted after delivery.

The owner had only had the M4 GTS for about a week before he brought it to the Circuit of Americas F1 Race Track. He managed to squeeze in 1200 miles in that week and got the “M Break in Service” done, then put 343 track miles on it, during the advanced and instructor run groups,.

Over the whole weekend, the M4 GTS ran flawlessly. So one can only be appreciative of what BMW has accomplished with the GTS version of the M4.

It’s great to see cars like this in their natural element and not just at Cars and Coffee or being locked away in a garage.
