BMW’s biggest moneymaker – the X lineup – continues to grow. In less than two weeks, the company will unveil a new compact SUV scheduled to go in production in 2017. The BMW X2 will be slotted – as expected – between the X1 and X4 and will offer a compact SUV with coupe-like shapes catering to a young demographic. Next on the X-list is a flagship truck. The X7 – to be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina – will debut in 2018 and will be BMW’s largest SUV ever produced.

The BMW X7 will sit above the X5 and X6, competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class and Range Rover, in the full-sized luxury SUV segment which simply dominates the luxury market, at least in America. Range Rovers, big Benzes and Cadillac Escalades are some of the most popular luxury vehicles in America, so it only makes sense that BMW would want in on some of the action.

BMW is currently testing the X7 on public roads using the next-generation X5 platform, which not coincidentally is being shared with the X7. The large, luxurious SUV will be longer and larger than the X5, with a length of 5,25 m. It will house 7 passengers and will offer cabin space and luxury like no other BMW before.

The folks at AutoGuide have put together some new renderings to illustrate a potential X7 design. The computer generated images show a large, curvy SUV with a massive kidney grille, along with sleek laser headlights connecting with the grille. The three quarter view is typical of a large SUV, without any extra fanciness.

In terms of powertrains, the 3.0 twin-turbo I6 from the 740i is likely to be the standard engine with the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 from the 750i being the top-end engine, much like the 7 Series. A plug-in hybrid variant is probable and maybe even a variant with the 6.6 liter twin-turbo V12 from the M760Li is possible.
