In late 2018, BMW will launch a new, ultra luxurious SUV which will sit at the top of the X lineup. The BMW X7 will sit above the X5 and X6, competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class and Range Rover, in the full-sized luxury SUV segment which simply dominates the luxury market, at least in America. Range Rovers, big Benzes and Cadillac Escalades are some of the most popular luxury vehicles in America, so it only makes sense that BMW would want in on some of the action.
BMW is currently testing the X7 on public roads using the next-generation X5 platform, which not coincidentally is being shared with the X7. The large, luxurious SUV will be longer and larger than the X5, with a length of 5,25 m. It will house 7 passengers and will offer cabin space and luxury like no other BMW before.
Speaking to Automotive News earlier this year, BMW’s Sales Chief, Ian Roberston, said that the new SUV will have not one but two variants on sale, one of them being an extra-luxurious model. No additional details were offered at the time.
The rendering seen here – and created by Auto Zeitung – showcases a large, boxy SUV with a massive kidney grille, reminiscent of the Vision Future Luxury Concept, along with sleek laser headlights. The three quarter view is typical of a large SUV, without any extra fanciness.
In terms of powertrains, the 3.0 twin-turbo I6 from the 740i is likely to be the standard engine with the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 from the 750i being the top-end engine, much like the 7 Series. A plug-in hybrid variant is probable and maybe even a variant with the 6.6 liter twin-turbo V12 from the M760Li is possible. But don’t expect to see a 2.0 liter diesel in the X7, it’s going to marketed far too high for something like that.
As for the launch date, expect the new SAV to come out somewhere in late 2018, with an ultra-luxurious alternative coming later on.
