Mercedes-Maybach Concept shows off name and gullwing doors

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6

We recently saw a teaser for a concept car from Mercedes-Maybach. In the teaser, we see an in-profile shot of the silhouette of what seems to be a very long, very classic looking coupe. Mercedes hadn’t given away what it was, what it would be called or what it would compete with. The only thing we knew for sure was that it would be a Maybach.

Well, now Mercedes has released a short teaser trailer of the car and we get quite a few more details. First, we get a few glimpses of the car, which looks every bit as long and as elegant as it did in the teaser photo. We also get a good look at the grille and headlights. The massive grille with its vertical bars is actually quite reminiscent of a BMW’s grille, as the center vertical bar seems wider than the others, giving it a sort of split look. Above the grille we see a Maybach badge with the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed start popping up from the hood.

The video then flows down the side of the car to the back. This is where we see the first really big new detail. As the camera focuses on the rear end of the car, we can see gullwing doors rising in the background. Now that we know this will have gullwing doors, it makes so much sense. Gullwing doors have been part of Mercedes’ heritage since the 300SL Gullwing. More recently, Mercedes launched the SLS AMG (an incredible car, by the way), which also had gullwing doors. So it only makes sense to give the Maybach such dramatic doors. In fact, the doors fit a Maybach’s personality a bit better anyway, as they’re needlessly dramatic.

Next, we get the current name of the thing. While it’s still just a concept name, we finally have something to call it — Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. If you’re thinking that sounds familiar, it’s probably because almost every BMW concept also uses the “Vision” moniker.

We have no other information, but it does seem that Mercedes-Maybach is looking to take on the Rolls Royce Wraith. The brand has been wanting to do a long, two-door grand tourer for over a decade now, as evident by the old Exelero concept. We don’t know what sort of engine this Mercedes-Maybach 6 will use, but likely the twin-turbo V12 used in the Mercedes-AMG S65, to compete with the Wraith.

We’re looking forward to finding out more about this mysterious Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. We’re likely going to see its debut at Pebble Beach later this week. We’ll keep you posted as we get new information.
