A BMW high-end coupe and convertible to rival the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will arrive sometimes in 2018. Over the last few weeks, news of a new 8 Series have been popping up on our newsfeed and were eventually confirmed by our own sources.

The guys from AutoBild also claim that the Munich-based company has already started working on a new model that will be based on the Vision Future Luxury concept and will sit above the 7 Series, filling the gap between the BMW flagship and the Rolls-Royce offerings.

Despite initial reports, both cars will use the 7 Series platform and technology, with different engines. The Mercedes-Benz Maybach reveal planned for this week might be one of the reasons why BMW has decided to move forward with its plans.

Under the hood, only the 6.6-liter V12 used on the M760Li xDrive model would be offered at first, with over 600 HP and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. A plug-in hybrid is also rumored but it would have considerably more power than the 740e model currently on sale. A six-cylinder unit will also tackle the Mercedes-Benz S400 Coupe.

Even though our own sources point to the codename G14/G15, the German media talks about a new internal code: P17.

The renderings seen here are based on the Vision Future Luxury Concept which stands for a forward- looking fusion of exclusivity and innovation, and for a driving experience that is at once emotional and exclusive. The 8 Series would follow these steps and likely improve upon them.
