According to Apple analyst Gene Munster, the Silicon Valley-based giant will partner with BMW to develop its much rumored Apple Car. It’s been long rumored that, if Apple even ends up developing a car, it would joint forces with an existing automaker to help manufacture it. However, this has largely been conjecture, it seems that Munster, an analyst for Piper Jaffray investment company, believes Apple will end up partnering with BMW.
Admittedly, this isn’t the first the Apple/BMW rumor we’ve heard, as its been long rumored that the two companies could work together. However, there’s been no evidence to back up any of these claims. In fact, BMW squashed claims of such a venture between it and Apple to build a car. Also, Munster doesn’t have the best track record of predicting products for Apple. But he is adamant about the Apple/BMW venture for a future car.
The thinking here, along with the thinking of other Apple/BMW rumors, is that Apple will develop the software and technology behind the Apple Car, while BMW would handle the manufacturing of it. Munster isn’t the only person to believe Apple will search for an outside manufacturer, as it has no previous experience with such a business. In fact, even the long time automotive executive, Bob Lutz, felt that would be the best direction for Apple.
The venture between Apple and BMW also makes some sort of sense, as BMW is already heavily invested in electric and autonomous car technology. So having Apple help with the software side of things could be quite beneficial for both Apple and the Bavarian brand.
We must remember, though, that there is no real merit to any of these claims, as it’s all speculation. The ideas are sound and make sense, but there’s no evidence to prove such a venture between the two giants. It is an interesting thought, though, and could be very helpful for both brands.
