This is it folks, the drag race we’ve been waiting for since the new M5 Competition was announced. When the F90 M5 came out, the world rushed to race it against the biggest rival it has, the Mercedes-AMG E63. The problem was, everyone apparently couldn’t get a non-S version and therefore, the M5 had to compete against a more powerful car in every drag race we’ve seen. Now the time has come to turn the tables on the Mercedes.
The guys from CarWow got their hands on both the BMW M5 Competition and Mercedes-AMG E63 S, and they did what everyone would: drag race them. Now, it should be pointed out that, in various drag races posted on Youtube, the M5 was already neck and neck with the E63 S and, in some cases, it even faster. Not the case with the CarWow race, where the E63 S managed to just pull ahead of the standard M5.
This time though, the BMW M5 comes with 625 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque pushed out of its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, which makes it more powerful than the E63 S at hand here. The Merc has 612 HP and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque coming out of its 4-liter twin-turbo V8. It has more torque therefore, and less HP but not by much. Both cars are all-wheel drive and have launch control.
The race is quite tight once again, but the BMW wins the 1/4 mile run with a time of 11.1 seconds, while the Merc delivers a 11.3-second dash. In the rolling race, the Merc wins it but we think it was all due to the reaction time more than anything else, as the E63 S couldn’t lose or distance itself from the BMW. There’s also a brake test performed here, where the lighter M5 Competition wins, once again.
