In South Africa, BMW’s B57D30S0 quad-turbo 3 liter inline-six cylinder has got the third place on the podium. This engine is a wonder. Displacing only 3.0 liters and sporting only six-cylinders, it manages to create 394 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. Admittedly, it does house four-turbochargers to help get the job done but it’s still impressive. 561 lb-ft of torque from a six-cylinder engine, regardless of the turbocharger count, is impressive.
But what’s more impressive than its astonishing power is how smooth and usable it is. The B57 powers the BMW 750d and allows the massive luxury sedan to get from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. That’s damn fast for a massive diesel-powered luxury car.
This massively powerful BMW diesel engine will return fuel economy of 7.2liter/100km.
The engine is also presently used in the G30 M550d, G05 X5 M50d and the G07 X7 M50d.
Second place goes to Porsche’s 4-liter flat-six which is used in the 911 GT3 RS. It produces 520 hp (383 kW) at 8,250 rpm while torque is measured at 470Nm.
And the first place is not actually reserved for an engine, but rather for the entire Tesla powertrain and its Model 3. The range-topping Model 3 is powered by a 75kWh power pack providing 456 of peak power, good enough for a 0-100km/h time of 3.3 seconds and 500km of combined driving range.
