BMW’s next big announcement will be of the M2 Competition, the more hardcore, more thrilling version of the standard M2. We recently caught a sneak preview of the BMW M2 Competition, thanks to a bit of a mistake from the BMW Australia website. The photos we saw were a bit low-res and highly stylized, so it was hard to get a good look at the M2. However, some new leaks of the M2 Competition have been released, thanks to Evo Magazine and an enthusiast forum poster. And this time, there’s info to go with the pics.
The photos are of magazine pages, so they also aren’t the clearest but they’re still better than the ones we previously saw. Here, we can see more about the BMW M2 Competition. It looks good on those new, massive wheels and with its slightly more aggressive face. As if the M2 wasn’t angry looking enough already, the Competition looks positively furious.
But the really exciting news is that this leak provides specs as well, and they’re directly from Evo Magazine, so they’re legit. What’s interesting is that we had though the M2 Competition would use a newly M-tuned version of BMW’s B58 engine, dubbed the S58. That would have given it an all new, bespoke engine. However, Evo claims that it uses the BMW M4’s S55 engine. That’s not really a problem, we were just hoping for something built off of the B58, as it sounds better than the M4’s S55.
The BMW M2 Competition’s S55 engine is a 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged I6 that makes 404 bhp and 406 lb-ft of torque. That’s less power than the BMW M4 but the same amount of torque and the M2 Competition is lighter. That engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. According to BMW, with the dual-clutch, 0-60 mph happens in 4.2 seconds. Although, we find that to be a conservative estimate.
It will also get the same carbon fiber strut tower brace as the BMW M4, as well as massive 400mm front rotors 380mm rear rotors with six-piston calipers up front and four-pots at the back. So it should stop as violently as it accelerates. Inside, there are the same sport seats as you’ll find in a BMW M4, with the illuminated “M2” badges.
We’re excited to see the BMW M2 Competition when it officially debuts. It’s not far away so stay tuned.
