BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe to get some electric motors also

When it arrives in 2019, the first BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will not only make use of a front-wheel drive architecture developed in Munich, but also of electric motors in higher-powered models. If desired, the 2er Gran Coupe could send the power to all four wheels, thanks to its xDrive system. At 4.5 meters long, the new 2er Gran Coupe is longer than the upcoming 1 Series and slightly shorter than the new G20 3 Series Sedan.

The top engine in the 2 Series Gran Coupe will produce 252 horsepower, but in order to offer an M Performance model, the power will be further enhanced by an additional electronic module, which could deliver 65 kW of power and 165 Nm of torque.

Analogous to the G20 3 Series, the 2er Gran Coupe could be offered with the 143 hp three-cylinder . Alternatively, a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 197 hp and three diesel units with 156, 197 and 240 hp are also part of the lineup.

The 2er Gran CoupĂ© takes a big step in terms of operation, networking and digitization. Inside, a new digital cockpit is used, which relies on fewer switches and mostly on the voice control delivered by the BMW Intelligent Assistant “Hey BMW.” The focus is on integrating the car as a companion in the daily routine.

The production will kick off in July 2019 and all cars will come with the M Sport configuration as standard. This includes a more muscular body, a non-adaptive, extra stiff suspension, M Sport brakes, steering rack and 18″ wheels. Sport seats will come as standard while M Sport ones will be offered as an option.

Have a Happy New Year!!!


 It has been a crazy ride, this last year. We had so much joy and some pain, but all in all it was a good year.

We went to Galveston Island several times. It is my happy place.

My boys are getting so big! Yesterday we had to buy new tennis shoes for Duke, who just turned 14. He wears a size 12 and is about 5'11''.

Thank goodness that Imp is still child-sized. BTW, his brother nicknamed him "chicken nugget nuugee nose" and he HATES it! So we have been trying to figure out a similar nickname for his older pesky brother. No luck so far. How can we beat the genius of that nickname?


I do love my guys. Time is just going to fast.

Except when it doesn't.  This photo was taken yesterday. I made everyone go hiking with me and it was cold. Of course, it started raining almost immediately and we were not dressed appropriately.

That hike seemed to last about a year... Time has never crawled so slowly.

The only way I was able to make it up with my guys was to insist on going out for pizza for lunch.  Then all was good.




Another amazing year with Paul. This guy constantly cracks me up. He is also very wise, adventurous, and takes great care of our family. He is our rock.

BMW M850i Rendered in Widebody Guise, Looks Enticing

One of the most desirable cars in the range of our favorite Bavarian brand is definitely the new BMW M850i xDrive. It’s a beautiful car, no matter how you look at it, and it’s bound to break a few hearts. It’s definitely poster material and maybe kids these days already have it posted on their walls – if that’s even still a thing – but what if we took things a bit further? The M Performance model is great and all and the M8 that will follow will most likely be even better, but what if tuners got seriously involved?

We’ve already seen what AC Schnitzer can do with it and boy, did they hit the jackpot. However, what we’re looking at today is an even bolder proposition: a widebody BMW M850i. Widebody kits are definitely not for everyone as they drastically alter the look of a car. I, myself, am not a huge fan of such tuned models but this rendering does look great and I hope someone puts it in production, as it is a game changer.

The picture comes from the guys over at Car Lifestyle and shows the M850i seriously wider than in standard guise along with a new rear bumper with four exhaust pipes, new, wider wheels and tricked out fenders. It’s a good looking take, that’s for sure, and it could probably be done since the M850i already has wide hips to begin with. Whether anyone will pick up on this and actually try to build it remains to be seen.

In the meantime, the M8 that’s in development right now, might arrive with a slightly wider body than the standard 8 Series. We don’t have exact info right now but that’s not an usual thing to happen, especially on the rear axle where a trick differential might need a bit more room to fit. We’ve seen it on the M3 for decades now and the M8 might also provide such a change. With over 600 HP under the hood, chances are we’ll see some supercar-like performance figures once it comes out, especially in a straight line.

Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Is one of Jeremy Clarkson’s Best Five Cars of 2018

Now that 2018 is drawing to an end, all sorts of tops and rankings pop up, summarizing what happened in the last 12 months. Jeremy Clarkson apparently is a fan of such things, even though I find it hard to believe he’d ever admit being into such a mainstream habit. Nevertheless, the famous car journo published a short 5-car list of his favorite rides of 2018 on UK magazine Driving, where he occasionally shares his thoughts.

Surprisingly though, one of his favorite rides this year was the Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo. The 600-HP sedan impressed Clarkson quite a lot and understandably so, as it brings supercar levels of performance in a car that’s comfy and can fit five adults inside for longer hauls. He even went as far as to say that the Alpina creation was “easily the best 5-series I’ve driven”. That’s quite a compliment from a man known for his caustic remarks and downright hurtful, brutal honesty. To top everything off, he said the B5 “really does feel as close to perfect as any car can be.”’

What’s probably even more impressive though is the company the Alpina B5 has in this five-way ranking. The best car Clarkson drove this year was the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, followed by a surprising appearance from the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. That’s surprising because Clarkson is not necessarily known to be a fan of Porsche, to put it mildly. However, if he admits that he truly loved it, “everything about it”, this must be a special car.

The last two cars in his ranking were the Aston Martin Vantage and the Bentley Continental GT. The Aston was claimed to be ‘a match for the Porsche 911’ when it comes to sheer driving excitement while the Bentley was deemed “A brilliant piece of completely over-the-top styling sitting like the icing on a properly made cake.” Taking a look at this list, mainly made up of supercars and 2-seaters (the Continental GT’s rear seats are more befitting for carrying a purse rather than a human being anyway), the fact that the Alpina made the cut says everything you need to know about it.

VIDEO: BMW F90 M5 Marginally Slower than Aston Martin Vantage on Track

One of the biggest reveals in the automotive world this year was the new Aston Martin Vantage. The new British 2-seater changed from its core, leaving naturally aspirated mills behind and stepping into the present, using a 4-liter turbocharged V8 instead. Developed by Mercedes-AMG and refined by Aston Martin, the mill delivers plenty of power for a car this small. Therefore, would comparing it to the new F90 M5 be fair?

“Not really” would be the short answer. The problem is, the M engineers did such a great job with the new car that it is now being compared to almost everything on the planet. The guys from Motorsport Magazine in France, took it to their traditional Magny-Cours GP track and did a fast lap with it, to see how it stacks up against other cars. The clock showed a lap time of 1:58.39, making it just a bit faster than the M2 Competition (1:59.78) and slower than the BMW M4 CS (1:56.07).

Then, earlier this month, the guys also took an Aston Martin Vantage out to the same track to see what it can do. That fancy new V8 delivers 503 HP to the rear axle along with 498 lb-ft of torque. The car is also light on its feet compared to the F90 M5, tipping the scale some 400 kilos earlier at 1,590 kg (3,505 lbs). That said, the Aston does 0-62 mph from standstill in 3.6 seconds, a bit slower than the M5 which has the all-wheel drive advantage in this case.

Nevertheless, on the track, that sprint time means close to nothing as technical track demand more in the weight and braking department, where the Vantage should have the upper hand. The lap posted below shows that it did win but only by 19 milliseconds, the two cars being way too close to call a certain winner. When the proper rival for this car will come out, the M8 to be more precise, I don’t think things will be as close.

Five Cars the BMW M850i xDrive Beats to 62 MPH

Even though we’re still a few months away from seeing the BMW M8 in all its glory – specs included – the BMW M850i xDrive is already here and it brings plenty of performance to the table. At a first glance, it may not seem like one of the fastest cars in production today but taking a closer look will unveil a couple of surprises. The M850i is a proper land rocket in a straight line, thanks to its V8 engine but also due to its xDrive all-wheel drive system.

BMW claims the M850i xDrive will do 62 mph from standstill in 3.7 seconds, which is a bit slower than what the M5 can do these days but still incredibly fast. That figure puts it ahead of some seriously fast cars, albeit not necessarily from the same generation. One of those is a Lamborghini. Yes, it’s not part of the current line-up but back in the day the Gallardo LP550-2 was one of the fastest cars in the world and a recognized supercar. That beast would to the sprint in 4.2 seconds.

Then there’s another iconic model from Italy, the Ferrari F430 which would do the same run in 4 seconds flat, followed by McLaren Mercedes SLR with 3.9 seconds. That’s an iconic car, developed by BMW’s age-old rivals from Mercedes in collaboration with McLaren, developing 626 HP back then, a serious power difference showing how far transmission systems have come, becoming more capable in putting down power.

The runner up in this list is the legendary Ferrari F40, a car that wrote history was it was launched and was considered the supercar to have for a couple of decades. It still fascinates plenty of car guys and it was quoted at 3.9 seconds by the Italian manufacturer. Last, but not least, the Mercedes-AMG GT S comes in really close to the M850i xDrive, doing the sprint in 3.8 seconds. Some consider the GT S a supercar too and that says a lot about what the 8er brings to the table.

Woodenbridge - A natural phenomenon in the Garden of Ireland

Joe Carr liked to describe Woodenbridge as the Augusta of Ireland, and while comparisons are odious, the first Irishman to play in the Masters Tournament was better placed than most to appreciate the Co Wicklow gem's unique ambience.

Set in a gloriously wooded vale where the Avoca and the Aughrim rivers meet,  Carr was not the first to realise that this was exceptional golfing terrain — an oasis of natural beauty and an area of Ireland that's an inspiration, not just golfers, but poets too.

Thomas Moore's song The Meeting of the Waters referred to the place where the Avon Mor and Avon Beag meet further along the Vale of Avoca.

But the lyrics of his 1807 classic still capture something of the essence of terrain that remains an idyllic destination for golfers seeking a few hours respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life:

"There is not in the wide world a valley so sweet
As that vale in whose bosom the bright waters meet
Oh the last rays of feeling and life must depart
Ere the bloom of that valley shall fade from my heart

"Sweet vale of Avoca! How calm could I rest
In thy bosom of shade, with the friends I love best

Few people know the club as well as former Honorary Secretary and secretary manager Henry Crummy, a Sligo native who moved from Cloonloo near the Roscommon-Sligo border to Woodenbridge in 1962 and has witnessed over half a century of activity at Ireland's third oldest club.

"First of all, we strive to be the best, look after our members and strike up a good relationship with visitors and make them want to come back to Woodenbridge because they've enjoyed their experience," Henry said of the ethos of the club founded by Colonel Bayly in 1884. "That's it in a nutshell. 

"We have always been regarded as a very social club and I'd like to think that we provide all the facilities you would require for a nice day out, apart from a golf course that's highly maintained."

Like many clubs, Woodenbridge lost some 200 members during the most recent economic downturn. But most have been replaced by new blood, many of whom hail from the towns and villages nearby.

Thanks to wise economic planning, the club will be completely debt free in two years' time, and while natural disaster is always a threat in the form of flooding, the club continues to go from strength to strength with its privileged location making it one of the most scenic in Ireland.

"We were a nine-hole club for over 100 years, but we decided to make it an 18 hole course in 1992 and it was achieved and opened two years later," Henry said. "We were privileged to have the help of Patrick Merrigan, who died a few years ago, and he was wonderful.

"He's designed some beautiful courses all over Ireland, such as Slieve Russell, Tulfarris, Faithlegg and the Old Head of Kinsale. But the job he did for us is remarkable in that you would not be able to discern between the old and the new nines. 

"It knitted so well together that within a year or two of completing the job, it would have been very difficult to tell them apart. It's a fantastic achievement.

"He had a wonderful eye for detail, and if a plan he had drawn up on paper was not going to work, he had no problem saying so."

Golf course architect Ronan Branigan worked extensively with Merrigan, remarking on the late designer's death that "he really got into the bones of a project; nothing was done on a whim."

That love of detail is evident at Woodenbridge, and while the club has suffered more than its fair share of natural disasters over the past 50 years, it's a small price to pay for such wonderful golfing terrain.

Any reluctance among the membership to move from nine holes to 18 under Merrigan's guidance quickly faded. It was a case, not just of taking advantage of an opportunity to purchase land and extend the course, but to accommodate the growing number of members and visitors.

"It was a great family club, but it was always busy, so we were delighted to make that move," Crummy explained. 

Building a clubhouse to match the new course was the next challenge, and Woodenbridge did that in 2000, building a new €1.5m facility, bringing the total sum invested in the course and buildings to over €2 million.

The golf course remains the club's pride and joy with Merrigan's clever use of water making it a thought-provoking and challenging for golfers of all levels.

It's all a far cry from the early days of 1884 when the first officially documented game of golf took place when Col. E.A.R. Bayly invited  Sir Stanley Cochran of Woodbrook House to field "a team of gentlemen" for a round.

The club joined the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1899 and was redesigned in 1915 by Tom Travers, the then renowned Dun Laoghaire professional.

It remained a nine-hole course until 1994 when Merrigan created a new, par 71, 18-hole course to great acclaim.

Storms have wreaked havoc on the course over the years, particularly in 1965, 1986 and 2000, when €350,000 of damage was caused.

More damage was inflicted in recent winters but despite it all, Woodenbridge thrives, and the club remains on course to become completely debt-free in 2020.

"The first big disaster was 1965 when the bridge was swept away," Henry explained. "Then Hurricane Charlie ripped us apart in 1986, and half the new clubhouse we were building was washed away. After 2000, when there was another major disaster, we had more damage in 2010 and again in 2016. 

"But when Patrick Merrigan was designing the new course, he allowed for the potential flooding of the course by contouring the fairways to take an influx of water and allow it to get away quickly.

"When the River Avoca floods and the waters come down from Glendalough, a high tide in Arklow can back up, and we are the only place the water can go. We have done everything in our power to protect ourselves, but Mother Nature remains number one."

In Woodenbridge, Mother Nature has proved to be a blessing, creating a small paradise for lovers of the game  — a place to lose themselves in splendid isolation, free from the hustle bustle of the world for a few hours of golfing bliss.

A carry of 160 yards over the River Avoca is required to make the fairway from the white tees.  The river then runs all the way up the left-hand side of a hole featuring nine well-placed bunkers, three of them in the landing zone. With three more bunkers in the lay-up area and three more protecting the two-tiered green, a par is always a good score here at this potential card wrecker.

PGA Professional Craig Lewis says:

"A straight tee shot between the bunkers is required and while longer hitters can reach in two, an equally straight second shot is needed. The play for most golfers is to lay up short of the pathway running through the course, leaving you around 100 yards to well guarded, two-tiered green. Aim for the centre of the green with your third as shots heading  left can easily run off the slope, out of bounds."

Maynooth University's Ronan Mullarney added a 73 to his opening 72 to lead the Irish challenge into the final round of the Patriot All-America Invitational in Arizona.

The Galway international (23) shares 40th place on five-over par, 10 strokes behind 36-hole leaders Isaiah Jackson and Alex Scott at The Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park.

His Maynooth University teammate Caolan Rafferty (26) followed his first round 74 with a two-over 72 to lie one stroke further back, tied for 46th on six-over with Royal Portrush's Peter Kerr, playing out of St Andrews University, tied 70th on 12-over after a 73.

Scores

Rafferty and Mullarney will now play together in the final round.

Jackson, a junior at the University of Memphis, finished birdie-birdie to card a six-birdie 68 as Scott, a senior from Grand Valley State University, posted a three-under-par 67 to tie for the lead on five-under, one shot clear of Quade Cummins from the University of Oklahoma (70-66) and Jackson Suber from Ole Miss (69-67).

Defending champion and first round co-leader Mason Overstreet shot a three-over-par 73 to share 12th place on level par heading into Monday's final round.

Participants in the Patriot All-America Invitational play in honour of a fallen or severely injured US soldier by carrying a golf bag bearing the name of that soldier.

Before the tournament, participants receive a card with the soldier’s story, so they can be familiar with who that person was, what they represented and how they were killed or wounded in action.

Rafferty is honouring Bradley S. Bohle from the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, who died September 16, 2009, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device when he was on patrol in Ghur Ghuri, Afghanistan.

Mullarney is carrying a bag bearing the name of Army Staff Sergeant Eric S. Holman of Evans City, Pennsylvania, who died on August 15, 2012 in Godali, Ghazni Province, Afghanistan aged 39.

Kerr is honouring U.S. Army Sergeant Gary A. “Andy” Eckert, Jr who was serving as a carpentry and masonry specialist and died on May 8, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Samarra, Iraq. He was 24 years old.

BMW flagship executive Hildegard Wortmann leaves the company

According to German magazine The Welt, BMW loses one of its top managers  to possibly the Volkswagen Group. The report says that former Senior Vice President Brand BMW and until recently director of the sales region Asia-Pacific, Hildegard Wortmann, has left the company.

A brief statement by a BMW spokesman confirmed: “Ms. Wortmann is leaving the company.” The Welt says her next destination is the Audi where she will have a chance to a board member position.

Ms. Wortmann joined BMW in 1998 and has played a crucial role in the successful re-launch of the MINI brand. She was for a few years the Senior Vice President Brand BMW, responsible for all activities related to the BMW brand. She was previously in charge of product management for the BMW’s X and Z models.

In 2016, Ms. Wortmann was the driving force behind the BMW Film, “The Escape.”

Compared to former BMW purchasing executive Markus Duesmann who was blocked by BMW to take over as Audi’s CEO, Ms. Wortmann is only locked for six months, so she could start on July 1st, 2019.

According to our sources, Ms. Wortmann has always had ambitions for a board position, but her move to Singapore as head of the sales region Asia-Pacific, excluding China, might have derailed her plans. Peter Schwarzenbauer, who is responsible as a board among others for MINI, Rolls-Royce and the motorcycle division will retire in the foreseeable future for reasons of age, so it remains to be seen who’s next in line as a board member.
