We’ve heard rumors about the current X5 being planned for a shorter production span than the usual 7 years for a while now, but there was no official confirmation from anywhere. If we go by the normal BMW cycle, then the next X5 won’t be out until 2020, but some reports put the next SUV on the market within the next two years.
With that in mind, some rendering artists are starting to illustrate the design of what promises to be the most advanced X5 to date. German magazine Autobild takes a first stab at the X5 design with a unique approach to the front fascia. The premium SUV features – in these images – a kidney grille similar to the one revealed by the G30 5 Series, along with a more upright nose, elongated and sleek headlights and a new approach to the front bumper.
The rear end also emphasizes the use of sharp lines and planes, with the typical BMW creases that give the car a sporty look. Overall the rear end retains the typical X5 proportions that has turned the premium SUV into one of the most successful models ever built by BMW.
The new G05 BMW X5 will be built atop a new platform shared with the upcoming BMW X7. Both SUVs will be assembled using the CLAR architecture which allows them to shed some valuable weight.
Under the sheet metal is where the big changes will happen, with the car receiving a new infotainment system as well as new engines under the hood on top of the lighter architecture. The xDrive35i models will be replaced by xDrive40i ones that will be using the new B58 3-liter straight six engines you can now find on the BMW 340i for example. Rated at 320 HP they will bring more power to the table compared to the N55 units used right now as well as less emissions and better fuel consumption.
A plug-in hybrid should also form part of the portfolio and there will almost certainly be M Performance and dedicated M versions.
