Drag racing is by far one of the most popular forms of car racing in the world and one that’s affordable to almost everyone. So it comes as no surprise that week after week, across the world, people get together to flex their muscles, in this case, their cars’ muscles.
Enter, for example, South Africa’s CarMagazine and their annual ‘Performance Shootout’ which sees the new Porsche 718 Boxster S taking on the BMW M2 Coupe, two cars that can’t any different. The M2 brings to the table a 3.0 liter TwinPower turbocharged engine in a six-cylinder configuration and pushing out 365 horsepower and 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels.
On the other side of the fence, we have the super sporty, open-top, Boxster S. The top of the range Boxster uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged, capable of churning out 345 HP and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque.
But when it comes to straight line performance, the two sport athletes are fairly close. The M2 needs 4.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill, while the 718 Boxster S is only a tenth of a second slower.
The Porsche is, however, 150 kg (331 lbs) lighter than the BMW M2, and in a drag race, that might make all the difference in the world.
Let’s have a look.
