The new BMW 5 Series gets a new member today. The all-new 5 Series Sedan is being joined by the ever popular – in Europe – 5 Series Touring. In the first official pictures, we see the new 2017 BMW 5 Series Touring with the M Sport Package, because of course the G31 sports wagon also carries all the genes for the joy of driving, which is anchored in the brand core: balanced weight distribution, rear wheel drive and straight-six cylinders. And of course, anyone can order the BMW 5 Series Touring with all the goodies found in the 5 Series sedan, including all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering and roll stabilization.
One of the most important questions for the touring customers is, of course, related to the trunk space: How much storage space does it have? The answers are even more convincing than the 3.6 cm shorter predecessor, because the trunk volume grows to 570 – 1,700 liters and its permissible load by up to 120 kilograms, depending on the model variant (to 720 – 730 kilograms).
Thanks to standard air suspension on the rear axle, the suspension of the new sports tourer can be optimally adjusted to any load condition. The rear seat, which can be split in the ratio 40:20:40, can also be unlocked from the trunk, together with many clever fastening possibilities, like the separately opening rear window and the tailgate opening.
In order to ensure maximum fun with all practical strengths, the Bavarians have prescribed a strict diet for their new 5 Series Touring. Depending on the engine, the weight drops by up to 100 kilograms, the lightest variant for the market launch is the BMW 530i with a DIN unladen weight of only 1,640 kilograms. The entry-level diesel 520d, also powered by a four-cylinder engine, weighs only 15 kilos more.
“The BMW 5 Series Touring was developed specifically for the European market, where it has enjoyed great success over the last 25 years. I am sure that the versatility of this new, fifth generation will prove even more popular with those customers who appreciate the 5 Series Touring’s characteristic roomy, variable loading space combined with its distinguished appearance and – of course – its BMW-typical driving dynamics,” says Dr Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management at BMW AG, Sales and Marketing.
The 530d xDrive, which is the focus of the first pictures of the new BMW 5 Series Touring, will also be one of the best-selling variants, even if it does not quite reach the sales figures of the even more economical 520d. With the possibility of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in well under six seconds and burning less than five liters on 100 km with less fuel, the 530d certainly has a very special appeal to many customers.
The 2017 BMW 530d Touring is the only G31 variant available at the market launch in June with both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. The remaining models 530i, 540i and 520d are only available with one of the two concepts. In the course of the year 2017 additional variants will certainly be added and more drive diversity will be ensured.
No surprise is that the luxury combi from Munich can be equipped from the beginning with the most modern ConnectedDrive systems. From the latest iDrive generation with a tiled menu, touchscreen and gesture control to the HUD with a 70 percent larger projection area, the BMW 5 Series Touring also has the complete infotainment program on board. A fast WLAN hotspot for mobile devices, the finally functioning wireless CarPlay and the elegant possibility for inductive charging round off the modern program in terms of networking.
The offer of assistance systems and electronic helpers is considerably more extensive than its predecessor. Just like the sedan, the CoPilot of the G31 5 Series Touring is also capable of handling the car in a semi-autonomous driving mode and, in many situations, at speeds of up to 210 km/h. Front-end collision protection, city emergency braking function and the remote-controlled parking are some of the other driving assistance features.
For now, the BMW 5 Series Touring will not be available in the U.S. as a final decision has yet to be made by BMW of North America.
