These images allegedly show the BMW M2 Convertible

The folks at Autoblog.nl claim that the images seen here are not only real, but they’re also showing the yet-to-be announced BMW M2 Convertible. The claim is quite surprising, considering back in February, M2 chief engineer Frank Isenberg denied the allegations of a BMW M2 cabriolet.

Speaking to Australia’s Car Advice, the engineer said “there will not be an M2 Convertible. We need to keep it as purist as we did with the 1 Series M Coupe.”

“We’ve got such a nice M235i Convertible. And convertibles are not for racetracks, they’re for cruising,” Isenberg said. “You can take that car on a racetrack as well, but you wouldn’t choose it for a track day,” Isenberg added. “That’s the reason why we said no [to an M2 Convertible].”

BMW already makes an M4 and M6 convertible, so it isn’t out of the question to have a convertible M car, even lightweight sporty ones. Plus, the M235i has a convertible option, so it’s not like BMW wants to shy away from adding weight to small performance cars. So a BMW M2 convertible is certainly within the realm of possibility. But we’re not sure enthusiasts would like it much and it might not sell very well because of that.

Just like the M4 Convertible resembles the coupe model, the M2 would lose the roof and the B-pillar, while the rear end will get slightly modified to account for the roof folding. The engineering side is not extremely complicated, but the market for it, certainly is.
