Latest spy shots from Munich fully reveal the interior design of the new BMW 5 Series. Just as expected, the G30 5er took uses the same playbook as its bigger brother – the G01 7 Series – adopting a safe, yet modern and extremely luxurious design. The steering wheel is nearly identical with the ones in the 7 Series, while the front console features the same floating LCD touchscreen sitting atop a slightly curved dashboard. The chrome buttons and inserts around the center console are also reminiscent of the 7 Series ones, while the driver-oriented cockpit remains a BMW staple.
Our sources have always emphasized the design approach to the interior as being closely related to the flagship sedan, giving BMW the opportunity to fix one of its biggest complains – the lack of a high premium cabin in midsize cars.
The prototype spied is the 550i variant featuring the typical trapezoidal-shaped exhaust pipes and at the front, the aggressive M Sport Package. The G30 5 Series is an evolution of the F10 5er, but with modern accents which will clearly distinguish the two models. Even though were eager to call it a smaller 7 Series, the new midsize sedan will have its own identity and character.
What the 5 Series will inherit from the more premium 7 Series luxury sedan is the latest and greatest tech, from the new iDrive infotainment system to gesture control and even laser headlights. Autonomous driving will be an important component of the new 5 Series so expect an even more advanced system than the one found in the 7 Series.
Although the new 5er has grown in size, the car will actually be lighter than the current F10 5 Series. By using carbon in the body structure and the new CLAR platform, the curb weight should fall by up to 100 kilograms. And that’s encouraging considering that the weight loss and the enhanced steering has been praised by journalists in recent tests.
BMW will unveil the new 5 Series in about a month, followed by new press test drives towards the end of the year and a world premiere in Detroit.
