R2-D2’s 1982 Rolls-Royce Corniche Could Be Yours

2

If you’re a fan of the Star Wars franchise you might want to sit down before reading on. Anyone who has watched the series at least once knows that the heroes in the universe George Lucas brought to life wouldn’t have gone far without the help of a resourceful astromech droid by the name of R2-D2. The little guy saved them a number of times and now, you can actually buy something of his, a Rolls-Royce Corniche.

Back in the 70s and 80s CGI wasn’t as easy to use as it is today. Therefore, ingenious tricks had to be done to make sure everything seemed from a different planet or a galaxy. In order bring R2-D2 to life, Lucas asked actor Kenny Baker to actually fit inside a costume and play… a robot.

That, in turn, led to some hefty paychecks that helped our man out through his years. The paychecks were so generous apparently, that in 2002, Baker bought himself a Rolls-Royce Corniche and this particular car will soon be up for grabs at an auction in the UK. The buyer won’t get to shake Baker’s hand as he unfortunately passed away last month, but he will get a rather rare car.

The Rolls-Royce Corniche in question is a Coupe and only 1,108 of them were ever built. It has 76,500 miles on the clock and all the bills to back up that claim but it also needs some TLC according to various experts who estimated its worth. The auction will take place on September 24 in Leamington Spa, England and estimates claim the car is worth about £32,000 to £36,000 ($44,200 to $47,500). That’s without the celebrity factor taken into account though. We’ll just have to see how loved R2-D2 was once this goes up on the auction block.
