There are three digits that simply drive every car enthusiast wild — “V12“. There are some genuinely brilliant BMW engines on the market that range from four to six to eight-cylinders. However, there is no engine configuration with more prestige and more allure than the V12. BMW has been known to make a good V12, having made one for the McLaren F1, which is considered to be one of the greatest automotive engines of all time. However, the Bavarians have also been known to stuff one under the hood of a 7 Series and the best example of that is in the E38 BMW 7 Series.
For the E38-generation BMW 750iL, the engineers in Bavaria stuffed an M73 5.4 liter V12 under the hood. That monster engine developed 322 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque. While that may not sound like a lot, especially compared to the current BMW M760Li’s 600 hp, it was good for its time. Plus, that engine wasn’t about all-out power, it was about being under-stressed and powerful enough to waft its passengers along in smooth, silky speed. It was a brilliant engine, the M73. And in the absolutely brilliant E38 7 Series, it was a match made in heaven.
This 2001 BMW 750iL is a great example of that. The silver, with the M Sport package, this 750iL looks simply awesome. It exudes class, power and prestige like few cars can even do today. The “V12” badge on the front fender doesn’t hurt, either. But it’s under the hood that impresses the most. This specific car’s engine bay is especially clean and you can see that mighty V12 heart.
Inside the E38 7 Series, you’ll find one of the best luxury cabins BMW ever made. While it obviously lacks the glamour and technology of today’s BMW 7 Series, there’s just something so regal about the E38. Every is build with superb quality and feels like it will last forever. It’s a certain sturdiness that’s lacking in even today’s BMWs. It’s simple and elegant, yet luxurious. This car’s cabin seems to be in superb condition, as well.
While there is no mileage listing on this ad, it seems like it’s in very good shape and the E38 7 Series is one of the more reliable BMWs in recent history. The plus side of this car is that it’s pretty cheap. At only $7,950, this car seems like an absolute steal, being that you get one of the best luxury cars in BMW’s history and a flipping V12.
Admittedly, without knowing the mileage or history, buying a car like this can be a real gamble. While that mighty V12 is incredible, it’s also incredibly expensive to repair. So if it needs some work, it could end up costing more than you paid for the car. Plus, considering its age, certain electronics and gizmos can go wrong, costing a pretty penny.
