The debut of the upcoming G30-generation BMW 5 Series is almost here. We’ve heard quite a lot about the G30 5er and are anxious to finally see what it’s going to look like and be like. However, we do still have to wait a bit longer. But in the meantime, some more spy photos have been released of a G31 5 Series Touring driving around wearing only a bit of camouflage. We don’t own the spy photos, but they can be found here.
In these pictures, we can make out quite a few detail, as the photographer was close enough that we can see the creases in the camo, where body line and panel gaps meet. To be completely honest, there doesn’t seem to be much difference between this G30 5 Series and the F10 model it replaces. It does seem a bit tighter, though, with seemingly shorter front and rear overhangs and it also seems a bit lower.
In profile, this is a very good looking wagon, possibly the best in its class. The current Mercedes-Benz E Class Estate has a weird rear end and the Audi A6 Avant is a bit too understated, almost being boring. This 5 Series Touring has near-perfect proportions and looks very good, as did the previous F11 5 Series Touring.
Up front, we see a lot of BMW 7 Series in this 5er. The iconic Kidney Grilles are massive and the headlights blend into them in a very 7 Series-like fashion. The headlights are also angrier and more aggressive than the current F10-gen’s. The hood also aids in this added aggression, as its creases give the front end a more muscular look. There also seems to be a 7 Series-style Air Breather on the lower part of the front fenders.
Out back, we also see more 7 Series influence. The taillights seem almost pulled directly from the 7er and are much flatter and wider than on the F10. Also, the G30 5 Series Touring seems to look best from the rear three-quarters angle. This car’s dual exhaust pipes, one flanking either side, likely indicates that this is some sort of six-cylinder model.
Built on BMW’s new lightweight architecture, which first underpinned the 7 Series, the new 5 Series will be lighter than before. It will also be more rigid and should be more dynamic. The G30 5 Series will also boast an impressive suite of technology, much of it borrowed from its aforementioned bigger brother. Engine options should be the typical range of BMW four and six-cylinder engines, both petrol and diesel, with a petrol V8 option and a plug-in hybrid variant in the future. Transmission options are likely to be just a six-speed manual in lower-end European models and an eight-speed auto as standard here in North America.
Overall, there doesn’t seem to be too much differentiating this car from its predecessor. However, most of the improvements will lie under the skin. In fact, it almost seems as if this tester could pass as an LCI for the current F10-generation 5 Series. However, it should be a much-improved car and we can’t wait to finally see it in the flesh.
