On Fridays I like to post snapshots I took during the week that make me happy.
Piper Puppy got bit on the foot by a poisonous snake. It was probably a copperhead, they are all over the place here. He came in from his morning run in the backyard with a swollen paw and a very sad look on his face.
Growing up in the country with many outside dogs, this was nothing new to me. I didn't want to excite Piper and have the poison spread faster throughout his body, so I gave him a Benadryl and put him in his kennel in the kitchen with a bowl of ice water and watched him carefully. I knew if he didn't look better soon I had to bring him to the vet.
He took a long nap and woke up starving. After his huge lunch he was already limping around the house playing with his toys and by the evening his foot looked normal and he felt great. Now a few days later his paw looks as good as new, no infections or limping. Apparently the snake did not inject too much venom so we really lucked out.
Disclaimer: According to all the websites I searched for "snakebites on dogs", you should always bring your dog to the vet immediately. I choose the "watch and wait approach" which I do not suggest.
Someone dumped four adorable tiny puppies in a cardboard box in the rain by my parent's house. The evil heartless person left the box by the side of the road, next to a swampy wooded area. My parents almost ran over one puppy when they were going home that evening.
The puppies were covered in mosquitoes and fire-ant bites and had swollen bellies (worms), but other than that they looked healthy. My mother and father were moving that day so I offered to take them home until we could find a shelter.
Oh my, these puppies were unbelievable sweet. Duke and Imp couldn't get enough of them.
I was thinking to myself how Piper Puppy could use a new friend, but then Paul mentioned that I had to choose between a puppy or him. He still has "Puppy PTSD" from raising Piper Puppy. In fact, this weekend he has to go repair house siding and porch columns that Piper used for convenient chew toys.
So I decided to go with the one who supported us and, most importantly, doesn't poop everywhere. I was already really tired of cleaning up puppy messes...
We found a shelter who would take puppies and before we left one was already getting adoption papers filled out on him. And we were assured the others would go in a heartbeat since they were in great health and dachshund mixes. Oh boy, they were really cute...
But then again, so is Paul.
It wasn't all about puppies this week. I learned how to make my own ghee following this tutorial and it turned out amazing! It smells and tastes like butterscotch. I used Costco KerryGold salted butter and it worked perfectly and cost about $4 for 16 ounces. If you have ever priced grass-fed ghee you will realize this is incredibly cheap.
