The ALPINA name is associated with the epitome in luxury and some of the best driving BMWs you can get your hands on. The Buchloe-based company has come a long way as a car manufacturer, considering it has begun its life as a tuner that enhanced BMW 2002 models. If you’re a fan of the original Neue Klasse models but want some ALPINA goodness to go with your main dish, this 1972 BMW 2002tii Touring might be for you.
What makes this BMW truly special though is the fact that it’s available in the U.S. as the Touring model never made it across the Atlantic through official channels back in the day. Chip in the fact that it’s also fitted with a plethora of ALPINA upgrades and you’ve got a collector’s item here. The upgrades include a close-ratio dogleg five-speed with 75% locking LSD and 3.9 final drive, ventilated rear disc brakes, ALPINA chassis setup with Bilstein suspension, high-ratio steering box, auxiliary VDO gauge cluster and many more.
Under the hood, the original engine is still in place and the current owner claims that the 2-liter unit continues to deliver great power, especially over 4,000 RPM. The price tag is currently at $25,000 but it requires some maintenance. A recent inspection showed that all front lower control arm bushings are worn, the transmission selector shaft and output seals are seeping, the front and rear sway bar end links are worn and rattling, the left control arm is slightly bent – not enough to affect the alignment – and the differential pinion and output seals are seeping.
Fixing all of those shouldn’t be incredibly expensive though and if the price is right, you might get yourself a truly rare bird that could go up in value over the years. Since the 2002tii Touring is one of those cars that could not only be great investments, but it will also give you some bragging rights in the parking lot.
