Castle’s Robert Moran showed his quality as he finished tied for 21st despite closing with a disappointing 76 in the final round of the Portuguese Amateur Championship at Montado Hotel & Golf Resort.
Just four strokes off the pace at halfway after a brace of 70’s, he was six strokes behind entering the final round but mixed three birdies with five bogeys and a double bogey to end the week on one-under par.
He finished 12 strokes behind 16-year old Portuguese star Daniel da Costa Rodrigues, who led by two strokes from England’s Laurie Owen after rounds of 69, 67 and 69 before closing with a 70 to win by three strokes from Owen and France’s Lucas Abrial on 13-under-par.
Castleknock’s Paul Coughlan tied for 28th on level par after a 74 with Dun Laoghaire’s Alan Fahy 44th on six-over after a 74.
