Among the plethora of new models arriving this year, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is one of the more interesting ones. According to our sources in Munich, the car is bound to be unveiled later this year as a 2020 model, most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The new model is going to be quite intriguing considering is using a front-wheel drive architecture.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe will be a front-wheel drive car for all intents and purposes, with xDrive all-wheel drive thrown in for good measure. Our sources say the US-bound versions will only be sold in all-wheel drive configurations, at least at first, with the top of the range model, the M235i, being available solely in this guise. The 300 HP model will be sharing its 300 HP engine with the BMW X2 M35i as well as the automatic 8-speed gearbox from Aisin, and a couple other things.
The M235i will get special features compared to its less powerful alternative, including different body panels with better aero, a different M Sport steering wheel, lower suspension, better brakes and M Sport seats. The same features should be available on the 228 HP version, which will be sharing its 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with the MINI JCW. The lower-trim version will bear the 228i badge and be coming with 17″ wheels as standard, 18″ and 19″ models being available as optional extras.
Inside the cabin we’ll get to see the BMW Live Cockpit Professional instrument cluster on the 2 Series Gran Coupe only as an optional extra, as well as the latest version of iDrive. Opt out and you get the next best thing, which is the iDrive 6.0 version. Other options will include new paint colors (Seaside Blue, Storm Bay or Snapper Rocks Blue) as well as Adaptive LED headlamps, Laser lights being kept off the ordering books for now.
